Make sure the hold switch is not engaged - it will interfere with the charging process. Here is a link to the full user's manual:

try to restore your ipod via DFU mode. Here is a great step by step guide to do that. http://iphonefreakz.com/beginners-guide/howto-dfu-mode/
I hope this helps,
Nathan.
SOURCE: I am having the same problem
The bios can only be flashed if you have more than 10% battery charge. check if you have any other AC adapter. is the battery does not charge with another adapter then it could be a battery or motherboard fault. Try another good known battery, If even a good known battery fails to charge then its a motherboard issue. Call technical support and get the motherboard replaced.
Rate if useful.
SOURCE: battery died and the phone wont turn back on since
you only say the battery is dead, change the battery and check once.
SOURCE: the flash does not work and shows a red lightening
Two possible causes: 1. Your battery is weak. 2. You have the flash turned off. Press the button with a picture of a lightning bolt and watch the screen to see if it changes. Stop when you see the bolt and an "a".
