Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

OK, I TOOK YOUR ADVICE AND FIRST REPLACED THE MAIN BOARD. WHEN THAT DIDNT WORK, I REPLACED THE CONDENSOR FAN IN THE FREEZER COMPARTMENT. THE FAN DOES NOT WORK AT ALL NOW. ALSO, BEFORE THE FAN USED TO WORK ON ONE CYCLE AND COOL DOWN THE FREEZER AND FOOD COMPARTMENT, THEN AS YOU WOULD GO IN AND OUT OF FOOD COMPARTMENT, WOULD STEADLY RISE IN TEMPERATURE. AT LEAST THE FAN WORKED FOR ONE CYLCE. SO FAR OUT OVER $300, AND PROBLEM WORSE THAN BEFORE. NOW WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST? BEEN WITHOUT A REFRIDERATOR SINCE JULY 1, OVER 3 WEEKS NOW DUE TO SERVICE TECH THAT WAS RECOMMENDED BY SAMSUNG NOT HAVING PARTS AND HAVING TO ORDER THEM AND TAKING 2-3 WEEKS TO GET BOARD AND NOW FAN IN. PS: THE SERVICE TECH'S HELPER SAID THAT HE TOLD THE SERVICE TECH THAT PUTTING IN A NEW FAN WOULD NOT WORK BECAUSE IF IT WAS THE FAN, THE FAN WOULDNT COME ON AT ALL, AND THE FAN WAS RUNNING BEFORE, EVEN BEFORE THE NEW BOARD WAS INSTALLED, FOR AT LEAST LONG ENOUGH TO COOL DOWN THE FREEZER AND FOOD COMPARTMENT TO THE DESIGNATED SETTING. HE REPLACE THE OLD FAN AND LEFT RIGHT AWAY AND NEVER EVEN CHECKED TO SEE IF FAN WAS BLOWING OR NOT. HE WANTED TO GET THE HECK OUT OF THERE. I THINK YOU SAID CHECK THE THERMOSTAT, BUT THE HELPER SAID HE COULDNT DO THAT BECASUE HE WAS TOLD ONLY TO INSTALL THE FAN. WHERE IS THE THERMOSTAT LOCATED? HOW DO YOU CHECK IT? SOMEONE TOLD ME THE THERMOSTAT THAT MONITORS THE FREEZER COMPARTMENT TEMPERATURE THEN KICKS IN AND BLOWS COLD AIR INTO THE FOOD COMPARTMENT WHEN THE DESIGNATED FREEZER TEMP IS REACHED. BUT WHERE IS THAT THEROSTATE LOCATED? NEED TO KNOW TO TELL TECHENICIAN BC I DONT THINK THESE SERVICE TECHS THAT SAMUSUNG RECOMMENDED KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. ISNT THERE A SAMSUNG REFRIGERATOR HOW TO REPAIR BOOK SOMEWHERE THAT SAMSUNG COULD PROVIDE ME AT NO CHARGE? WOULDNT IT SAY TEST THIS, THEN TEST THAT AND SHOW YOU AND TELL YOU HOW TO TEST TO SEE WHAT PARTS HAVE FAILED?

Hi, The thermostat that needs to be checked is located behind the rear freezer panel. The thermostat/bi-metal switch is attached to the top of the evaporator coil. To test the switch, it must be cold. You will need to unplug the bi=metal switch and test it for continuity. If the bi-metal switch is cold and has no continuity, replace the bi-metal switch. The bi-metal switch controls the evaporator fan motor & defrost heater.
Please let me know if this helps you at all or if I can assist you further.

Thanks

If you have a start relay , remove and shake - if you hear anything it is toast. with a cap either use a cap tester or just replace it and cross your fingers.

GE fridge not cooling. freezer working ok. compressor fan not working

This is an odd thing to hear. Normally when the condensor fan (}compressor fan) Isn't running the freezer is the one who's temperature rises and the fridge stays about the same. I would strongly suggest looking at the main control board, just for the simple fact that 9 out of 10 times thats the root of the problem

Ice in the bottom of the freezer

Ok here is a generic response without a model number.

One of 2 things have happened. Either the inlet water valve to the icemaker has failed as noted by ice blocks in the ice bin or

Your evaporator drain is clogged.

  • Unplug the unit remove the freezer contents and do a manual defrost by directing an external fan at the freezer compartment for just over 2 hours. (Makes a water mess so be prepaired)
  • Remove the rear fiber-board compressor and condensor coil cover and locate the compartment drain tube in the drip pan. Make sure the end of the tube is NOT blocked. Clean as necessary.
  • After the 2 hour period... use vacuum forced air OUT pressure on the end of the drain hose in the drip pan. Have a 2nd person listen for airflow in the freezer compartment. This will float out any debris from the compartment drain funnel.
  • Clean the condensor coils and fan while the unit is unplugged but do NOT use anything sharp.
If you can not get air-flow up through the compartment drain funnel underneath the evaporator coils you will have to remove the access panel and remove the debris from the drain funnel.

Return the unit to normal service after cleaning. Watch for more ice build up after a week. No ice blocks after a week... no worries. Ice under the ice-maker... replace the inlet water valve due to it bypassing water when in the OFF mode.

If you need model specific information.... I need your exact make and model number in any response.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Food compartment cools ok; bottom freezer doesn't.

the problem when a fridge needs a condensor fan is that it causes the unit to work harder there is a good chance that it cooked the sealed systm also might want to check the condensor for a clogg or dirty condensor.the temp around the unit ideally these are to be used in rooms of 65 to 96 degrees so if in garage can be hard to work well

Refridgerator side not getting cold model gss201epaww

make sure the damper vent door located between the freezer and refrige compartments is opening and letting in cold air from the freezer,if they ice up they can stick shut and not allow air flow, this door is behind a plastic grille an a hair dryer works great to defrost them

The top of the freezer compartment does not freeze ice, but the bottom does. The top of the refrigerator compartment is not cold, but the bottom drawers are freezing.

It sounds like the fan in the freezer is not working , letting the cold air sink , and going into the refrig section from the bottom . Replaceing just the main control board may get the fan going again , however , replaceing both ( possible shorted fan motor will cause the new board to malfunction again ) would be the better suggestion .

Refrigerator not cooling...bad odor.

check the condensor fan motor to see if its working and check the condensor for dust etc. the condensor fan is in the back on the bottom, you may need to remove a panel to access the fan. if the unit is running and the fan is not turning or if it is turning slow replace the fan. If possible check to see if the fan is getting 120 volts.

Freezer fan

actually, freezer fan has to come on otherwise how is the fridge supposed to cool.(fridge draws off from the freezer compartment). check if there is power to the fan. if freezer is nice and cold and fan does not run(assuming there is no power to the fan at that time, then you would need to check your freezer thermistors after that, your board. all this is assuming you dont have a blockage or shortage of gas in the sustem.
