Question about D-Link DI 514 Wireless Router (DI-514)

Dropping internet connection

My DI 514 drops its internet connection frequently. This does not happen when I hook my PC directly into my DSL modem. Disconnecting the power for 5 - 10 seconds always brings the connection back. Any suggestions on how to fix this please?

The problem started when I moved from the cottage in October.
    - Power should not be an issue because I use a UPS
    - Interference shouldn't be an issue because my PC connects directly to the router
    - I'll try moving the router but it was in the same position relative to the PC, etc. as at the cottage, and there aren't any other devices near it
    - I'll check my connection to the modem
    - I have the latest firmware
    - the DSL works fine on its own
Come to think of it, I shut down my WEP and turned on my SSID broadcast at the cottage so my sister could connect, but I had no problems with the router dropping before I did that...but I'll try those things.

Typical problem is that the WIFI card is roaming. This happens at a 5 to 10 minute interval as you describe. Typical problem is that the "preferred" network in the configuration file on the computer you are using is not YOUR network. If your sister is not having this problem then that is a clue that it is your PC's configuration. The system sees the other WIFI network (someone else got a new router) and downs your connection. This happens when you have "any available network" checked AND your neighbors put in a new WIFI connection. Let me know...could be something else but this is the typical reason.

This can be caused by a number of problems.

  • Power level fluctuations (ie surge or brownouts caused by storms)
  • Interference with other devices that use the same radio frequency (ie microwave, cordless phone, or another WIFI access point in the neighborhood)
  • Interference caused by motors' RF shielding failing. (Vacuum Cleaner, Refrigerator)
  • A bad physical connection to the Modem.
  • Badly written firmware.
  • DSL connection issues.
Ask yourself when you first noticed the problem and what has changed since then.

If you haven't already, you may want to check out D-link's web site.

Dlink DI-514 dropping my wireless connections

Your router probably needs a firmware upgrade to accommodate the throughput from the ISP server.
1. check with your provider to see if you have issue with your cable or DSL line.
Sometime if it is a DSL line it is the drop to your house , ( rodent chews in the line; rain or moisture, or dangling and not secured.
2.Cordless phones to close to the router will cause disconnection.
3. A firewall setting in an anti virus software can cause disconnect if not properly configured.
4. channell selection will cause disconnect on some older router such as yours and an new router is the only remedy because the router has come what is called " end- fo -life " and the manufacturer no longer support the router because of new router technology implemented.

Ran the setup wizard for the d link di 514 but still cant connect to internet

Do you have Internet connection before you installed the Dlink router? Do you have cable or DSL? If you have DSL make sure you have the username and password from your Internet service provider because you need to enter those information when you run the set up wizard. You need to connect your computer to the LAN port of the router. Turn off computer and router, turn on router first then turn on the computer. Run the set up wizard again.

I don't know how to connect my router. please help

If you have DSL or cable internet, disconnect the ethernet cable going from the DSL or cable internet modem to the computer. Disconnect the end of that cable that plugs into the modem. Connect an ethernet cable from your cable or DSL modem to the router where it says something like "modem", "internet", or "in". If the router is a wired router, connect the ethernet cable that is still attached to the computer to any open ethernet port on the router.

Try the DSL modem directly connected to the PC.No D-Link Router(powered off and disconnected). Verify that the PCcould surf/browse/connect to the Internet. Go to Start, Control Panel,Network Connections, right click Local Area Connection, Properties, scroll down to/highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Properties button.Get the IP Add, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS assigned to the PC(write this down. This will be your WAN/Internet IP settings). Then Disable DHCP of your modem if it has one. OK, close, save or whatever is applicable.

Disconnect the DSL modem from the PC. Connect D-Link Router to PC (wired/LAN) without the modem connected to the router.Go again to Start, Control Panel, Network Connections, right clickLocal Area Connection, Properties, scroll down to/highlight InternetProtocol(TCP/IP), Properties button. Tick "Use the following IPaddress". Enter this IP Add, Subnet Mask255.255.255.0,Default Gateway and the DNS from what youhave written down earlier). This will be your LAN IP settings. OK,close, save or whatever is applicable.

Open a browser and log into the D-Link router (, using "admin" as a username and no password). Do not run Wireless Network Setup Wizard. In WAN/Internet/Modem setting of router enable/check Static IP Add.Usethe IP numbers previously assigned to PC that you have written down asthe router's WAN/Internet/Modem IP settings. OK, close, save orwhatever is applicable. Reboot router. Connect DSL modem to router.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Convert from DSL to cable

I think wat ya need to do is completely set it all up again, right from the start.. I enclose a link for a manual & the other one is for the "Driver". review-manual/id/420ci364/t/1-2/ wireless-router-firmware-1.03-free-download.html Your "Provider" will have a different setup and address etc... indeed maybe they will have setup software and logon details on their web site, I suggest ya check that.
