Im getting a Windows cant open this file message

Im getting a Windows cannot open this file message when I try to run my exe programs any Ideas? Windows XP Pro, Internet explorer, avast antivirus, charter cable. This problem started when I updated Auslogics BoostSpeed. I've contacted them with no help yet. I've run 2 different dates on system restore, no help. The icon shortcuts don't work on the desktop. My control panel pulls up but won't open add and remove or most other areas. I can't run my antivirus which is no longer listed in my task bar. When trying to get another antivirus/spyware, they will download but when I push run to finish the download I get a Windows cant open this file message. I have deleted BoostSpeed through the my programs folder.Any other info needed I will gladly fill you in on if you might have a solution. Thanks in advance, Max.

PS. My .txt will open on my desktop but no programs listed there will.

Thank you Docbronk but safe mode didn't help. I even tried safe mode with networking and that didn't help in starting the programs either.

Thank you for your assistance, Max.

Yes it does also display the dialog box to manually select which application to use to open the file. What should I do when it does this?

I am trying to install master of orion II on a windows 7 64 bit operating system and it won't open, because DPLAY.dll cannot be found. I have downloaded the driver, put it in the sys32 folder, the...

Hello,

First install MOO2 on a computer were it runs and copy the entire micropose directory to the program files (x86) directory.

Then copy the dplayx.dll file from the windows\sysWOW64 directory and renamed it dplay.dll and put it back in the sysWOW64 directory (be sure the dplayx.dll file is still there) or if you have the 32 bit version it should be found in the system32 directory (I am guessing, but you will need a dplay.dll)

Found this great post about getting MOO2 to run in Windows 7, and even with the compatibility enabled it still has a graphics palette problem. The reason is because of Windows explorer, and to fix the problem you need to disable explorer.

I know this can be a little too much for some, there is an easier way.

Simply create a notepad file on your desktop, and paste the following.

(If you have 32-bit version of Windows 7.)

TASKKILL /F /IM "explorer.exe"
cd C:\"Program Files"\Microprose\Orion2
start /w C:\"Program Files"\Microprose\Orion2\Orion95.exe
start C:\Windows\explorer.exe

(Copy and paste below if you have 64-bit)

TASKKILL /F /IM "explorer.exe"
cd C:\"Program Files (x86)"\Microprose\Orion2
start /w C:\"Program Files (x86)"\Microprose\Orion2\Orion95.exe
start C:\Windows\explorer.exe

Make sure you rename the text file to Moo2.bat, then it will launch Moo2 and disable explorer. Moo2 plays perfectly fine this way, even without any of the compatibility enabled.

The Batch file will also restore your explorer when you exit the game.

Alternatively, you could use DosBox to play the game.

Wen i download a file and then try to open the file it just keeps sayin this program cant be run in dos mode how do i fix it

Does the file end in .exe?
It sounds like you have downloaded a Windows executable to a Macintosh system, and when you click on it it opens in the text editor, which displays the binary contents of the program, which usually contains the message "This program cannot be run in DOS mode."
Windows executables cannot be run on Macintosh computers unless you have also installed Windows, either under Boot Camp or under a virtual machine monitor such as Parallels or Fusion.

Keyboard\service.exe not found error

This is a virus that infected your computer. There is no "keyboard\service.exe" file in Windows. Your antivirus likely removed it but it's still trying to load up on start up.

Go start->Run and type in "msconfig"
Then go to the startup tab on the window that appears and look for that particular exe file and disable it. You shouldn't get the message anymore.

Also clean your harddisk wint an antivirus program

" After receiving many complaints from people’s about this virus, I finally decided to guide the users about the removal of this virus. Some of the problems caused by this virus are :
1. Show Hidden Files and Folders not working.
2. My Computer Drives open another explorer window.
3. When you run a program, just in 2 or 3 minutes the program dissappears (Actually runs in background but you can not see its window in foreground).
Removal of this Virus
Unfortunately, I have no removal tool to remove this virus at the time of writing, but you will soon see one. You can try the manual removal of it.
Manual Removal
Caution : While the manual process is going on, do not open any My Computer drive.
1. Open up cmd by typing cmd in Start –> Run.
2. Type in cmd
taskkill /f /im smss.exe
taskkill /f /im killer.exe
3. The virus placed some files at the root of every drive so you need to clean them.
Repeat the following commands on cmd for all your drives (Here it is applied for C drive)
del /a:h /f c:\autorun.inf
del /a:h /f c:\smss.exe
del /a:h /f c:\funny ust scandal.avi.exe
4. Now you need to delete files in windows folder so type :
del /a:h /f c:\windows\killer.exe
del /a:h /f c:\windows\autorun.inf
del /a:h /f c:\windows\smss.exe
del /a:h /f c:\windows\funny ust scandal.exe
5. Now you need to delete one more file :
del /a:h /f “%userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\lsass.exe”
6. Use PowerExes to delete startup entries like.
smss.exe
lsass.exe(if it does not remove then only uncheck it)
killer.exe
7. To restore Folder Option Settings Follow this page
Show Hidden Files And Folders Not Working
8. To Remove the virus from Flash Drive, Insert a flash drive cancel any Autoplay box.
Open cmd and type (Replace x by your usb drive letter)
del /a:h /f x:\autorun.inf
del /a:h /f x:\smss.exe
del /a:h /f x:\funny ust scandal.avi.exe"
