Question about Black & Decker 19" Electric Lawnhog Mulching Mower with Rear Bag

2 Answers

I have a black and decker 18" Lawn HOg electric mower. While mowing it simply stopped. When I pull the switch nothing happens. I took the cover off and tested. I have current at the brushes (armatures?). Is the motor fried? Is there anything I can do about it? It seems that no one repairs these things in Colorado Springs.

The last "expert", GodBlessU, advised me that the carburator was gummed up. THIS IS AN ELECTRIC LAWN MOWER!!!!! What a crock. Refund my money NOW.

This one was. The one from GodBlessU was worthless.

One good thing about electric cars or devices are they are mostly simpler than their gasoline counterparts. To check the motor use a multimeter and test the resistance and its continuity. Connecting the red wire to the positive probe and the black wire to the common of the tester. You should get low resistance from the motor. If by any chance you get infinite resistance or open circuit state, have the motor rotated and you should get varying resistance from 10-30ohms or close to that range. if that happens your motor is good and the problem may be on the circuit.
Have the brushes removed and inspect for physical damage and cracks. The copper conductor to which the brush rides to should be smooth. Open both ends of the motor to check on the plates. Check for the copper connections to the motor if there are breaks.

Hello,

Thanks for contacting Fixya.com

There should be some kind of button and an handle both should be pressed and only then the blade should rotate . When this happens it is usually a symptom of a piston that is gummed up and stuck in the cylinder. Sometimes it will free itself if you keep trying. Try spraying some carbeurator cleaner into the air cleaner. Remove the air filter and spray directly into the air intake.

Then pull the cord again. Hopefully it will turn over for you and then the carb. cleaner will be able to dissolve the crud. you need to take the top cover off the engone. under there you will find the points, if you take a match book flap and slide it between the flywhel and points(adjust points to fit snug to flywheel) and this will get you to at least start the mower. find out what the gap is to be set and set points accordenly

If all of the above troubleshooting fails yes then its the motor thats gone bad and you would want to talk to black & decker thay said thay would be glad to supply you with a manuel and how to,just call them at ,1-800-544-6986.

good Luck and God Bless.

Take off the black plastic hood (4 screws), clean debris and check connections to, and condition of, shunted brushes. They're available from B&D parts for a few bucks.

Electric mower keeps slowing down and stopping

Two things come to mind. The brushes in the motor should be replaced. (Get them at a local motor repair shop, but take one of them in with you to get the correct one). If that is not the problem it may be the switch in the handle that you turn it on and off with. The switch may be corroded or bent. Good luck...Lee
