Question about Sony STR-DE685 Receiver

1 Answer

Intermittent no audio to center channel

Shaking wires in back or banging the top brings it back. Sometimes works fine for many hours. Mark

Common problem in those units, bad or cracked solder joints on amp board and or dirty output protection relay, and as always look for repair shop in your area, do not attempt to do it yourself, firehazard and electric shock are the things we all want to avoid ;)

Works sometimes sometimes not

It could be a lot of things; such as, faulty wire connection, cold solder joint, HV voltage arcing, corroded battery terminals. intermittent short in the switches. If it stop work, try gently shaking it several times, push the on/off button several times. make sure the battery makes a good connection in the battery compartment. Wrap it up and put it in your freezer for a few hours. There are electronic components that might get hot/warm and by cooling them down they will start working again. GB...stewbison

The center chanel port does not produce sound and sparks when i plug the wires into the jack. all other chanels work except the center.

It seems that the center channel has DC voltage at the output terminals, center channel amplifier is blown and you need to bring the receiver into a repair shop. You can use a voltmeter to check DC at speaker terminals, all channels should have 0 volts when no input signal applied (or volume control set to minimum).
Do not connect your speaker you can damage it.

Sony center speaker and rear speakers don't work all the time

try using another speaker for the center channel and the left speaker, also watch your ohm load, most of the want a 4 ohm load. try to narrow it down to see if it is the speaker or the amp.

Stopped working

I had a similar problem with a jvc 8040. when I replaced the fuse it became very obvious that the b1560 output on the center channel was blown (smoke and sparks, always a dead giveaway). I haven't fixed the center channel yet but simply unplugged the center channel board and removed it from the unit. Now everything works fine except of course the center channel. Pre outs still operate just fine so a slave amp could be used for center channel power, or you could just go and buy a marantz amp; I did and then I realized that I was lucky that the old jvc quit.

Rear left channel not working on Onkyo NR801

Sounds as if it's time for a shop visit, unless you want to try this yourself. The panel connection on the rear of the receiver, or the protection relay have apparently come loose from the circuit board. It happens sometimes when stress causes the cabling to pull on the back of the unit..accordianman
