Nice rifle. One of my favs. Loved Marlin bolt .22mags since I saw Fran and Stephen using one in the original Dawn of the Dead. Bought a 983 as soon as I could afford one.
It'll work but you'll need the spring, too. The old style pin was pushed back out of battery by the locking lug as you pumped the gun. It won't push the new style so you could theoretically have a stuck firing pin fire a shell out of battery. Be safe, just use the firing pin for your bolt....or buy a new bolt off of Ebay. The entire bolt is a direct switch out.
Often with semi-automatic rim fire rifles, the most common cause of jams/failures to feed are related to improper cleaning. Most of these low-powered rifles utilize a blowback action to fire, and thus require a clean breech and chamber to provide proper obturation of the cartridge. Give your rifle a thorough cleaning, including a detail strip and clean. If you are experiencing other types of stoppages such as failures to extract or failure to feed, you may be experiencing a mechanical issue such as a worn extractor claw, or a weak magazine follower spring.
Compress the spring. Remove the C Clip. Remove the spring. Remove the firing pin & cocking piece from the shroud. Drive out the retaining pin in the cocking piece. Unscrew the pin. Reinstall in reverse order.
Remove the magazine tube and make sure the gun is empty. Open the bolt, take the safety off and squeese the trigger. Continue to hold the trigger back and gently pull the bolt back out of the breech. I beleive that is all there is to it. Good luck with your Marlin.
