If yourAmazon Fire TV displays normally but you aren’t able to use any controls, first try troubleshooting the remote. For more information on troubleshooting the remote, go to Can't Pair a Fire TV Remote or Game Controller. Restart your device. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the device or from the power outlet, and then plug it back in. You can also use your remote to restart your device. Press and hold the Select Select Button and Play/Pause Play/Pause Button buttons at the same time, for about five seconds. Or, select Settings > Device > Restart from the Fire TV menu.
Make sure that you are using the power supply provided with your Amazon Fire TV device. Connect the included power adapter into the power port on the back of your Fire TV, then plug the other end into a power outlet. For Amazon Fire TV (1st and 2nd Generation), make sure that you are using a High Speed HDMI cable, if needed. The cable should say "High Speed", "1.3", or "1.4" on it. Plug one end of your HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the back of your Amazon Fire TV, then plug the other end into an available HDMI port on your TV. For Fire TV Stick, make sure that you use the included HDMI extender. If you are using an HDMI hub, disconnect your Amazon Fire TV device from the hub and try plugging it directly into the TV. Try switching to a different HDMI port on your television. Remember which HDMI port you used to connect your Amazon Fire TV device and switch to the corresponding input channel on your TV.

Here are several answers--but keep in mind, they all involve attaching a device of some sort--whether it's a computer, a laptop, a tablet, a phone, or a device like Google's Chromecast, Amazon's Fire Stick or FireTV, or other devices similar to those I just mentioned from Google and Amazon.
You will usually need an HDMI cable to attach your device to the TV (whether it needs an HDMI cable or not depends on whether the device plugs directly into your TV's port or whether it needs a separate cable--of which there are standard HDMI, mini HDMI, and micro HDMI).
The simplest, easiest, and least expensive types of equipment to enable your non-"Smart TV" to view Netflix are the "key-fob" type devices like the Chromecast and Amazon Fire Stick (there are others, but these are the most common, most popular, and well-supported devices.)
You would simply plug the device into your TV's HDMI port, attach the power cable (these devices may be able to draw power from your TV's HDMI port, but often require a separate power adapter to be plugged into them) log onto your Google Play account or Amazon account, download and install Netflix, and log onto Netflix. Usually (but not always) the Chromecast and Fire Stick have Netflix installed, but you may need to update or download and install/reinstall the Netflix app.
