That depends - it sounds like fan motor going out or a foreign object. With a flashlight go outside and observe the unit running ( ideally during the malfunction ), you will want to shine the flashlight into the louvers of the case so that you can see inside the unit (( depending on construction)). Look for bent / loose fan blades and/or foreign materials. If no obvious obstructions are found you will need to consult a qualified person. To give you an idea of what you can expect I will construct a repair scenario :
Service call : $65 - $90
Fan Motor : $ 80 - $150
Fan Blades : $ 30 ( hopefully you can re-use your old one if it is not damaged)

The only other thing that it could be is the compressor, if that is the case don't bother repairing. Get a new unit.
Take my example, add it up and compare it to a new unit with a least as much or more BTU output. If repair costs are 50% or more of a replacement unit I would recommend replacing it with a new one.

A few words on selecting the right repairman.

If you choose to consult a repair service check to see if they are listed with the BBB.
Ask around - friends & relatives may be able to point you to somebody.
Take advantage of vocational programs in your area : Most vocational schools have heat and air classes. The young people attending these classes will sometimes repair your unit for parts cost to get the practice ( check with the school)

Hope this helps

I have dell 3300mp,when I turn the power on it makes a very loud noise. It does not make the sound in standby or cool down. It does work and display a signal okay, but it is very loud. Sound like a fan?,...

The main fan that cools the lamp is mostly high speed when the unit is running. when it shuts down it slows the fan down, until it stops in standby. So the noise is only really loud when it is showing a picture.

try setting the fan to eco mode (slower running) and see if the noise is acceptable. If it is still too loud then you will have to replace it. Have a look at the fan and see if any of the plastic blades are missing.

Same problem

your oven shut down because the magnetron got too hot (has a resetting thermal switch) .. it needs a constant and high flow rate of cooling air .. there is a fan that blows air over the magnetron fins ... sometimes the plastic frame that holds the fan becomes warped or broken .. the fan then doesn't deliver enough air to where its needed ... the squeaking noise however may indicate that the fan blade is either hitting the frame or the bearings in the fan motor need lubricated ... the fan is most likely the problem .. you can replace it or Lube it and repair any broken mounts .. make sure the fan turns freely and is aimed correctly .. use a light machine oil (intended for very small motors) or sewing machine oil .. not wd40 or oil with teflon .. your magnetron will be damaged if it continues to overheat .. you can gain access to the fan by removing the cover but do so only with the power disconnected and taped so no one can plug it in while you are working .. when plugged in there is potentially deadly voltage and current available inside .. . there are indeed two fans .. the vent fan and the magnetron cooling fan .. the loud laboring noise often happens if the magnetron is shorted or if the high voltage diode or voltage doubler capacitor is shorted ... but since your machine is still working until it gets hot i suspect those are not he problem yet but may be eventually damaged without cooling air flow .. that model GE did have problems with the fan mount and that in turn damaged some magnetrons ... the lube in the fan bearings generally is reliable up to 5 years depending on use .so that could be the problem as well

Air conditioner fan is making a loud noise

1. Could be a caught foreign object between A/C (air conditioning) fan and cooling radiator, producing this loud noise.
2. Could be a damaged fan blade, mowing the cooling radiator.
3. Could be a loud noise comming from the fan's electrical motor.
4. Could be a broken off fin (small wing) of the cooling radiator, striking the A/C fan, producing this loud noise.

Fan noise after a few minutes running.

Fans are typically a little noisey. If it's exceptionally loud or continues for a long time it may indicate the fan is no providing the proper cooling. Purchase a laptop cooling pad to place under the laptop while your useing it and make sure nothing is interfering with the airflow around the unit.

Over heat cooling fan load noise remove and replace

A bearing more than likely has went bad causing your fan to stop properly cooling your unit. Replace with a compatible fan and you should be all set. Hope this helps.

I have a loud knocking noise coming from my window unit a/c. What could be the problem?

This could be the evaporator/condenser fan blades striking the housing or it could be the compressor.

Turn the unit to "fan only" and see if it makes the sound you describe. If so, there is an issue with the fan. You may need to remove the outer cover and see why the fan is making noise. Look for debris, or insect nests that may have taken up residence. If no obstructions, look for bent, cracked or broken blades and possibly loose blades. Make sure the A/C unit is unplugged before working on it.

If no noise in the fan mode, turn the selector switch to cool, being sure that the thermostat is set low enough for the unit to try and cool. If the sound is emanating from the compressor, there isn't much that can be done in terms of repair and it may be time to replace the A/C unit. Compressors aren't usually worth the cost of repairs.

Haier ESA 3185 AC won't cool; makes escalating loud vibrating noise near front panel/ filter

Have someone check the run capacitor of this unit. If the run capacitor is bad over shorted it can cause the unit to run and short cycle on a current overdraw. This makes for an electrical imbalance in the compressor motor. Next step is the compressor is faulty.
