Open the case, remove all the dust from the fan, DO THIS WITH THE COMPUTER OFF AND UNPLUGGED! If you've never looked inside the case.... you will be surprised at the amount of dust inside. Blow it out, make sure all fans turn freely. Plug it in and fire it up.

My dell gx 270 desktop shows alert! previous fan failer. Press F1 to continue and F2 to run setup utlity. How to solve it?

The fan failure alert on your Dell, is caused by the timings. There is no bios settings, for this. You need a new fan that runs at 1400rpm or more. This will solve the problem, also a clean install solves this problem. Best to buy a new quite fan, keep the 5pin header from the old fan copy the wire colour for the pins, make sure the fan is pwm. In the worst case, you will have to change fan, and overwrite harddrive and do a clean os install. This will fix problem, other methods, like fan speed software will redduce the fan speed cook your motherboard, but will not solve the fan failure alert. Also enter bios by pressing f2 and clear log error before you install new fan and os.

I havd a Dell Dimension 8200 that sometimes shuts down and power light turns yellow. I can usally open case and plug and on plug to get it to power back up. Recently replaced fans due to fan failure....

Thank for the detail, it really helps...
Most people forget about the power supply. If the power supply overheats, it will shutdown. When shutdown, it will cool off then operate again.

A power supply goes by WATT ratings, the average size power supply is now 450 watts for an average system and should cost around $60.

good luck and don't forget to vote.

At start up i get Alert! previous Fan Failure

  1. Make sure the fan is functional, if not replace it (It should start immediately and turn freely)
  2. Boot to BIOS, clear the system event log in BIOS to clear the message.

Error message Fan Failure press f1

Some of those OEM systems have built in fail safe's like that to try and keep them running longer w/o failing. Just get a hold of Dell and get a replacement fan, they should send instructions on how to put it in yourself! :)

Fan Malfunction??

Sounds like a heat issue, pop the side of your case open and turn on the PC, are there fans not moving? Take a close look at your processor fan if there is one.

CPU cooling fan

Hi...you can press the F2 key to enter setup...and scroll down until the fan is highlited...hit enter and then F10 to save and exit. This tells the computer its OK.
you should have plugged the fan in the same pin port the old fan was in. Usually only 1,.
If the new fan is not from dell..it may be faster and noiser..or it may be faulty..if you bought it locally you may try to return it.
The purpose of the fan of course is to remove the hot air from the CPU to keep it from overheating. If this fan does it it is most likely ok.
Hope this helps..
