Camera top display is inoperable. - Ricoh GR-1 35mm Point and Shoot Camera

I have a Ricoh G1, a point and shoot style line of film cameras introduced back in 1997. At the time, and still today the camera is known for its remarkable optics, flexibility and size. Not a mass market camera by any stretch. A camera for the pro or pro-am camera enthusiast for sure. I used the camera for two or three years and it was wonderful. Then the display on top of camera went dark. I put it down intending to get it fixed, and never did. I recently relocated and came across the camera. Of course, i own digital cameras. But, i would really like to see if there is any chance of repair for this old friend. The rest of the camera appears to work well. Its less about the economics then the love for this old machine. Any help would be much appreciated.

This product has very limited technical guidelines. However you may try to open up the mechanism like shutter area. Some SLR cameras give similar problem which is usually fixable.

There are group of very sensitive springs connected to Shutter. Due to the environmental facts springs get tighter or partially stuck that cause delay or incomplete round of posing process.

If you have necessary tools and confidence to open the shutter area you can ease the springs you may even use precision oil gently around spring area and reduce the friction.

Take a try and post the result here. Also you may ask additional question we will gladly answer.

Well if everything else is working then either this display has a broken/loose connection to it or the display itself is burnt out. Either way, it is not worth fixing unless you want to open it up since buying a new camera would be in your better interests rather than paying for someone to open it or just using it as is since everything else is working on it. Let me know how this turns out.

Since you still want it because you like it so much. If you want to repair it yourself, then call Ricoh and they can send you a new ldd screen for the top or take it to any local camera shop or electronics store and they can replace it for you.

Powershot 200 will not take pictures, displays E18 on otherwise blank screen. Will show pictures stored on card -just will not take any new ones. Lens cover seems inoperable as well.

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

The position from the dial wheel is not corresponding with the electrical position. If you can do it by yourself you can adjust it and tighten the midscrew from the dialwheel
