Turn the computer over and on the base is a large access door with 5 screws and ventilation grills. Remove the screws and you will find the memory modules sitting in their slots. This laptop has two slots and the laptop can manage 4 gb of ram memory so that would be (2) 2 gb modules. You can whatever smount you want to, the modules do not have to be the same size. On either side of the module is a release lever, push the lever out on both ends and the module will pop up at a 45 degree angle, pull the module out of its slot at that angle. The module goes back into the slot at that same angle and once it is seated in the slot good, just push down on the module until you hear it click into place.
This Graphical presentation is the rare view (backside) of your Acer Aspire 5100 pc,
Refer to the specs, number 2 is the memory compartment, you only need to remove the screws which are intact with the particular cover. If you can do it by yourself, you can refer to this manual, Page 19. Manual Good luck..
You should to remove your memory sticks(ddr2) below you can see J2, make contact, put your memory modules again, turn on your laptop and the cmos/bios memory would be reset.
Sounds like a hardware issue. I would guess that there is a bad connection between the usb's and the motherboard. If you are comfortable dismanteling the laptop and re-soldering the usb's than give that a try, but I would recomend you give it to a pro.
Here is a link that explains the process.

if you see on the back of your laptop.
you can see the door, you just need to remove the screw and open the door and you can see the memory slot there.
thats unusual, you should try another cover as normally when you remove the panel the memory on an ACER laptop is accessible by just removing the panel.
