Ice dispenser is not dispensing ice

I have a whirlpool gold side by side refrigerator. At first the ice maker was dripping water and not making ice. I replace the silonoid valve and it worked fine for about 1 week. Now all of the sudden stop dispensing ice. It will make ice but when you press the glass against the latch for the dispenser will open, but no ice will come out.

Can you point to a part number or location?

  • David Morilla Jul 24, 2009

I replaced the ice maker motor per your suggestion and it is still not working. Do you have another suggestion?

  • David Morilla Jul 28, 2009

I pressed the dispenser button and the drive auger did not turn. I then tried to turn the drive auger by hand and it was very hard to turn. So as you mentioned before it must be the motor. The refrigerator model number is GS5SHGXLL00.

    Thanks,

    David

Is there an easy way to test the auger drive motor?

  • David Morilla Jul 29, 2009

I have a voltage tester and I took electronics in college. Just tell me where to place the tester and what to look for. I imagine I need to remove the motor place the tester at the end and press the glass against the dispenser. What reading am i expecting?

I found the problem and you will not believe what it is. There is a small pin made of plastic that presses on the swith. The stupid thing broke and therefore was not pressing on the switch. Thanks for all your help. Hopefully i can figure out how to put it all back together once i buy the part.

Give the auger a look in the ice bin. It may be jammed or something. The switch on the lever your glass pushes on activates the auger.

It could be the switch. If it fails to power the motor, it won't turn. Do you have any way of testing the switch? Can you hear the motor try to start when lever is pressed? Listen very closely, you may hear it hum or something, this would be helpful.

You really need a voltage tester or meter to make sure it's not just a switch at the glass dispenser lever. That's the only way to be sure which it is. I hate to have you buy a motor, and then have the same problem because the switch is bad. Home Depot sells some cheap voltage testers...

If you can get to the motor, with the dispenser pressed, check for voltage. If no voltage present, bad switch. If voltage is present and auger will not run, suspect bad , or jammed motor.

You should see 120 volts AC

Hello.

There are several things that could be causing the problem. Remove the ice bin and hold the door switch down. Press the dispenser button and see if the drive auger is turning. If it doesn't replace the motor. Also, check the auger drive piece with your hand to make sure it is not loose and cannot be turned easily by hand. If the metal drive piece turns easily by hand, replace that piece because it is stripped out.

Please ask me any other questions you have regarding this situation. I will work with you until we reach resolution. If you can provide the model number I can provide a breakdown of parts.

We have a whirlpool gold conquest side by side refrigerator. Water dispenser works, ice does not. Stopped suddenly making any ice. How do we fix it? It's only 2 years old.

Is the freezer cold enough? Should be close to 10 degrees.
Is there water or ice in the ice mold? If not put water in it and see if it dumps the ice after it's frozen. If there is ice, lift the cut off arm and let it drop to see if it will start.
If it does dump the ice but don't refill with water.
ICE MAKER NOT GETTING WATER
Try swapping the wires on the dual water inlet valve. It's on the back where the water supply comes in. Then try the water dispenser. The water should go to the ice maker. This will tell you weather or not the ice maker valve is working and if the line is clear.

The water inlet valve on the back of unit opens when the ice maker needs water. If the valve doesn't seal good because of sediment or wear it will continue to drip and when the water reaches the ice maker supply tube it will freeze blocking the fill tube.. You can take the water line off the valve and watch to see if it drips.

A strainer before the inlet valve can also get stopped up restricting flow.

Water dispenser leaks, ice maker won't make ice. Hve disconnected line at bottom front, and tried blowing out the lines, no help. Model EDQ22DQFNX00

Your water inlet valve on the back where the water supply comes in is probably leaking. disconnect the water line coming out of it and see if you have a slow drip. Try the dispenser to see if it's just drips after use.

For the ice maker problem, Try swapping the wires on the dual water inlet valve. Then try the water dispenser. The water should go to the ice maker. This will tell you weather or not the ice maker valve is working and if the line is clear. If it does, the problem is the ice maker and not the valve and line.

In door ice dispenser does not work but the water dispenser does.

check to make sure there is water or ice in your ice maker tray. If none then problem is usually a water supply issue to the ice maker. Behind the frig are the water supply inlet valves. One is for the water dispenser in the door. THe other is for the ice maker. However when one goes bad they both are replaced as one unit. Also Check position of fingers in ice maker. If not in a vertical position then try to reset the ice maker unit and worse comes to worse, replace it with a new one.
