Frigidaire top-load washer Loud noise during spin

Our 8-9 year old Frigidaire top-load washer with the plastic drum (FWS445RFS1?) makes a loud howling noise during the spin cycle, but it does not last the entire cycle. The sound is like taking a hose and spinning hard over your head. It sounds like a really loud UFO is in the area! It does it every time, but it takes about 60-90 seconds of spin before the noise starts and then after a few minutes you hear a "click" and the noise stops completely The machine continues to spin for a several more minutes and works fine, but its really noisy. Other posts seem to indicate a bad bearing, but if that were the problem, why would it start and stop so abruptly, especially with the sound stopping right after the click?

You mention that the lower spin bearing requires the transmission to be replaced. This macine is belt-drive. Does this narrow it down to the upper bearing or not?

  • Gary in BG Nov 22, 2007

Okay, can the bearing (upper or lower) be replaced with normal hand tools and some time, or does this require special tools? The tub does have some significant wobble during spin, so a bearing is probably bad. But, why does it not make the noise constantly when in spin?

Same problem. It initially started with a water leak. I believe that was caused due to a hole in the original drain tubing. That was replaced and shortly thereafter it was accompanied by the loud noise that the OP was reporting. I then replaced the belt due to some rubber shaving and wear found. I then observed that the motor pulley would just spin in the replaced belt and not turn anything. I applied some belt dressing and still had the same problem. I turned the pulley wheel attached to the tub. It freely turned clockwise but would not turn counter. I used a little more tension and then it would turn counterclockwise. But then if I turned it back it would sometimes "click" and it did not sound to be spinning freely as I could hear a rubbing almost grinding like sound. Turning the machine on, it would spin up with that horrible sound and the tub / transmission would seem to spin out of control and when I shut it off it was accompanied by the "clicks" and grind like noise. I believe this situation is now out of hands... We will be calling a serviceman.

Its either the upper spin bearing or lower spin bearing. the upper can be replaced by itself but the lower requires the transmission the be replaced

no it doesnt. its more than likely the lower bear. thats a weak point on that washer

  • chris hooper Nov 22, 2007

yes normal hand tools can be used. it gets loud when it gets hot. the click its making sound like a ball in the bearing dropping or a gear locking in the lower half of the transmission. ive been in this business 19 years not and time wise for me changing the transmisson is about 45 min. unexperianced about 2 hours. not hard just time consuming

During the spin cycle the washing machine becomes VERY noisy, sounds like its off-balance, but happens EVERY time, even with very small loads. The whole unit doesn't move when it happens, just extremely...

During the spin cycle the drum moves at a higher RPM and so the counter weight of the clothes within can make the drum rotate eccentric or out of sync.
So check if the belt is loose on the motor, checck if the spindle is tight with friction or the drum assembly suspension is out of alignment.
You must check the reason with the following points to confirm the drum spinning making noise. check point of noise , is this on hitting the sides , or from the motor, any foreign objects or the drum spindle. But you are the judge with a first view. Use good lighting to look out and confirm the fault.

My model #gltr1670aso makes loud noises during spin cycle

Usually this is due to either the drum support breaking or the back bearing being bad-neither easy to fix- or worth it. Try lifting the drum up and down, if it moves up and down they are bad. I see this a lot, and the price of repair isn't worth it. Craig

Loud banging noise during final high speed spin

I have the HE3T which is 6 yo. Last week it started making a loud banging noise in the spin cycle. I had a repairman come out. He said it is the drum bearings. He said that it is a problem with these machines and to call Sears. He said that the drum and bearing is one assembly and that Sears should cover it.

I called today and Sears todl me that I have to pay for a Sears technician to come out a determine if it is indeed the problem. If so, it will be covered under the lifetime warranty on the drum. I have to pay for the service call $75.00 and if it is the problem, I will be reimbursed. Cross my fingers!

Looks like the drum has droped

You will need to get the bearings replaced. Most noises from a washing machine occur during the spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping during the spin, the load of clothes may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the clothes, then re-start it. Repeat these steps if necessary.

"howling" noise during spin cycle (still there after changing burned off belt)

Travioso, there was two service flashes out on this model concerning the seal and bearing which means they had an issue with this washer. The howling noise you are hearing is the bearing and will need the new designed triple seal and bearing kit. This should be covered under your warranty, I believe it is 5 years. The numbers for the service flashes are TDL-0048A-B. Call Maytag and inquire about these service flashes, these should be covered. Catriver.
