Question about Rinnai Vent Free Gas Heater/

2 Answers

Gas heater smells like kerosene and stings the eyes,

It has been working fine but this morning it smells really bad and strong enough to sting the eyes.

I've had this happen before with another heater and it lasted a day and went away.

Do gas companies flush theie lines with anything?
It's a Rinnia Convector 516T

The last one was an Everdure 25mjp or something.

This is normal for a brand new unit,if not,it sounds like an exhaust leak or lack of combustion air.do you by chance have whole house fan? if so,you need to open a few windows when using it

I have a ready heater pro 100 and it fills the room/garage with a gas that burns the eyes and really stinks??? It is propane???

Could be escaping gas. Gas providers usually ensure the gas they supply smells bad so leaks are difficult to ignore. I have never experienced stinging eyes from the gas though.
Stinging eyes and possibly a dry and scratchy throat sound more like a heater that is burning inefficiently and producing excessive amounts of soot and carbon monoxide and probably other foul and potentially dangerous substances in addition.

All heaters produce such gases and should not be used without ventilation but when a heater is in a good state of repair and burning efficiently the emissions and the ventilation required are minimal.

From your description it would seem something about your heater is faulty and you should not be using it until it has been checked and declared fit to be used, when you should find it no longer stinks or makes your eyes sting.

One thought, if you have a dog about the place that has spent all summer marking his territory on your heater, it will stink, really stink, and make your eyes sting for a considerable time...

Smell emitting from gas heater

Carbon monoxide is completely odourless and every sort of combustion of a carbon or hydrocarbon fuel produces carbon monoxide. That is why heaters should not be used without adequate and efficient ventilation and heaters should be kept in good order because efficient combustion produces less and inefficient combustion produces more.

Inefficient combustion and the need for service can often be recognised by the characteristic blue flame being tinged with yellow.
Heaters burning inefficiently often produce a smell for the sensitive or stinging eyes but that is not caused by carbon monoxide.

The gas itself is also odourless and the characteristic smell is added to warn people of leaks. I think the added gas smell tends to settle or separate from the liquid gas to some extent so there will be times when it is so concentrated it isn't entirely neutralised by the burning process, at least that is my theory.

There is a very strong odor and is enough to sting my eyes while my new oven is self cleaning. Is this normal?

Yes this is normal, but will subside after a couple of self cleaning cycles, or after a few times of baking in the oven. Good luck !
