Error reading hard disk

I'm trying to solve the problem of my son's laptop but so far nothing has worked for me. When I turn on the laptop (Dell Latitude P4, with Hitachi DK23FB-40 disk) it display a message saying that there is an error reading the hard disk.

I did try to boot from a cd but same results. Is this an indication of a damage hard disk?

Re: error reading hard disk

Here is a Microsoft solution:;en-us;315265
To enter DOS mode, restart the computer and tap F8 (may be different on yours) that brings you to Safe Mode Options. You want to select command prompt and follow the above Microsoft instructions. Its a good idea to print it out. If none of this works, the hard drive needs repair by service people.

this problem often is fatal.. you could either try changing the IDE cable or the hardisk itself.. if you have spares.. but IDE type is not manufactured already..

I'm trying to increase hard disk space on a Dell

The Dell Inspiron 1100 is a laptop whereas the Dell Dimension 2400 is a desktop pc.

The hard drives are incompatible because they are a different size, plus the Inspiron only supports one hard drive so you can't install a slave device. The only way to increase hard disk space is to buy a large capacity internal IDE laptop drive or an external hard drive.

Press ctrl+alt+del to restart is just an instruction. Did you do it?
What happened? Was it read? Tell us more. Send your e-mail for
us to give you our feedback.
By the way, assuming that it did not work, Your hard disk must be
configured to your PC, by running a software driver for your new hard
disk. You can download it from the internet by running search " hard
disk driver". Just specify the brand.

Error code 0146 , can you help me ?

If this is a Dell computer , it indicates a hard drive failure. if so here is the solution:
Look at the bios and see if the hard drive is detected.
To get to the BIOS, when you turn on the system, you will be confronted with a black screen with the dell symbol in the middle, if you look at the top left of the screen, you should see something like
Press F2 for boot options
Press F12 for setup
Keep tapping the F2 or F12 key for boot options. this will take you into the BIOS.
Check also that it says enabled
Next see if you can boot the dell diagnostics partition. {F12}, then select diagnostics, once you have the diagnostics available run the memory tests and the hard drive test.
you should get a report when it finishes looking something like this:
DST Short Test: Failed
Error Code: 1000-0146
Msg: Unit 2 : DST LOC Contains previous error(s)

0F00: 0244
MSG Block: 57301297

MSG Block: 57301297
if there are more than two errors ide suggest a new hard drive. BUT TO SAVE YOUR DATA BEFORE ------>Do you have anything important? if you do, you will need to do a repair install of XP and get your files before the hard drive fails completely. Use the service tag to obtain full specs of the computer at dells website. This hard drive has previous errors, and has generated new ones. It looks like it is getting ready to fail. You may be able to use a xp disk to perform an operating system repair, the dell operating system CD will do this also. Here is a link: If you follow the directions exactly, you will not lose any files. Please continue to post about this issue, and operate this computer as little as possible.

also if hard drive is automatically detected

Replacing the battery on dell e510 - floppy disk drive not present

Replacing a laptop battery should not make a drive all of a sudden not appear.

You will have to enter the BIOS of the computer by hitting the required key stated at the first screen when Turning on the computer (usual located at the very bottom, it's almost always F2 or Tab or Delete)

Once in the BIOS the very first screen visible to you should tell you the drives hooked up to the machine VIA IDE or SATA. See if your HDD is located there.

1st. boot from hard drive,
2nd, cd rom

save changes and try restart.
i hope you do have OS installed.
