One of collegues pc keeps restarting randomly. The page goes black and then it restarts and login window comes up. Cable all seems fine. It's an HP machine, Windows XP SP3, 2GB RAM, Interl Core 2 Duo Processor, Kaspersky antivirus 6.0. Window update have all been done. This is worrying as she ends up loosing hours of work

Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
Select the Advanced tab.
On the Startup and Recovery section (last one) click on the Setting button.
Uncheck the box "Automatically restart"

By doing this, you'll get an error message, and possibly the cause of the computer restarting.

An Antivirus is not a guarantee to keep your computer clean from infections.

This sounds to me like it could be overheating or more likely bad ram. I had the same problem with a computer I was fixing and I replaced everything and it still did it until I finally replaced the ram and then it worked perfectly.

Only 2 possible reasons seem to be there either. Pull out the RAM From it slots blow it properly and re-install the RAM. Get a third party software for monitoring system heat. Monitor it and if processor heat going above normal then install one more fan to it.

So my laptop froze yesterday and I turned it off to restart it. When I restarted it it everything was normal but after the starting windows goes away it usually goes to the login page well now all it does...

Try starting it in safe mode.
When the computer is starting just after the beep or when the bios info goes away press f8 repeatedly and you will get an option to open in regular or safe mode.
Alternativly you can also hold down teh ctrl key and it should do the same.
Did you install or update and drivers recently?

I have a HP Pavillion Lap top and forgot the pass word that goes with my user name

Restart your computer. When your computer is restarting spam the f8 key until it shows you a black screen with multiple options. One of those options will be "Safe Mode". Select this option and it should give you the option to login as administrator when it displays the user select screen. When you select administrator and it lets you in change your account password. Restart your computer again and login with the new password you set.

Screen fade to white

Firstly, May be the drivers are corrupted, reinstall the drivers again (uninstall>restart>install drivers and restart).
