Cheapest way is to buy a bigger power head
you may achieve the desired power by boring and fitting bigger pistons but you will have to have a long talk with a dealer service center technician to see if that would be feasible to do
as the motor is quite long in the tooth, it may be a better to consider a late model or new unit as the advantages of the later technology will be beneficial in the long run

I have a 1969 Johnson outboard motor 6hp Having a problem with the throttle arm. It won't turn. Do you have any suggestions?

On the under side of the tiller arm there is a tension screw ... make sure it isn't too tight. It is simply a screw that threads through the casing of the tiller arm and friction rubs against the inside shaft. Corrosion or an incorrect adjustment may case it to be hard to turn. I always back mine off.... If I fall off the boat I don't want the bug ger coming bk looking for me at full throttle. Next would be to give the disassembled arm a good cleaning and greasing. It is very simple consisting of meshing sprockets hooked to a long rod.

I have a short shaft Johnson 6hp outboard, the Jon boat I mounted it on is too deep, and motor doesn't reach water. Is there a way to lower motor? A bracket to lower motor to reach water?

outboard motor manufacturers supply a long shaft leg for just this problem
Talk with your Johnson dealer and check used outboards on e bay
Lowering the whole motor may affect the boat and floatation aspects besides making it harder to steer and start

Does my 1979 johnson outboard charge the battery thru the powerpack?

Some models charged through a Magneto, but see if you can find the 1979 Year Manual. I have a 1979 engine myself in a 15Hp which is a Manual start(no battery) and I have a Sailhorse Johnson 8HP which has an electric port and is Manual start. I believe the 8HP would charge a battery as on a Sailboat the running lights needed power. The 8HP could power the lights directly.

Johnson offered options for electric start in lower HP units and options in charging systems to contain costs. You might get a better answer from someone by listing the HP of your motor. I was the original owner of the 15HP and remember the 9.9HP and others in the same Sales brochure. The Sales brochure may advertise more about the charging systems.

6hp Johnson outboard stalls & quits

go to an auto parts store and get a can of gasoline additive called seafoam. Read the label so you know how much to add to your 6 gallon tank. This stuff works wonders on outboard motors.
