Hi - this was not in fact what I was asking. All I want to do is that when I place the recorder in the cradle it used to open up with the Dictation Module whereas now it opens the G Drive with all the system files. It is an annoyance & I am probably being pedantic - can you help!? Thanks

Hi

To enable hands free recording with this device whilst it is in the cradle you must purchase the Olympus foot switch (RS25/26) which is sold as a seperate item.

The footswitch must be connected to the device and the slideswitch must be in the stop position when connected to the cradle in order to enable this function. The device will not function as a handsfree from the cradle without the addition of the footswitch.

Hope this helps. Please remember to rate my answer. Many thanks.

    Hi

I believe this has to do with the device switching between being an Audio device and being a Storage device. When set as a storage device it is likely to open the G drive.

    I have the following information on this;

If you open the [Remote Dictation] window while the recorder is connected, the function of the recorder is changed to Audio device from Storage device automatically. The recorder as AUDIO device is not displayed as a removable drive on your PC. Closing the [Remote Dictation] window and returning to the main screen will switch the recorder back to storage class device displayed as a removable drive.

You should try clicking the little icon on the toolbar to change the device to Audio and this may resolve the problem as it appears it is opening the G drive because it is set as a storage device.

If this fails to resolve the issue you can access an online help troubleshoot by doing the following

    • Click the [start] button, then select [All Programs], [Olympus DSS Player], [Dictation Help].

    • While DSS Player is running, select the [Help] menu,[Contents].

    • While DSS Player is running, press F1 on the keyboard.

Hope this helps. Let me know how you get on.

    Hi

    Not a problem at all.

Unfortunately I cannot post up a picture of the icon but when the device is connected there should be a little icon in the very bottom right of your screen on your toolbar that is directly associated with the device.

This icon looks like a vertically standing miniature computer tower which has a horizontal box shape on the right side of it.

Apologies for the description - best I can do in the absence of an image!

I know you will need the serial # to install, if you don't have one you can get this software version it say that it is for the Olympus DS-5000 digital recorder but also it is compatible with the previous version Olympus DS-4000 digital recorder at http://www.tvps.com/Products/Olympus-AS-5001-DSS-Player-Pro-Dictation-Version-5---New__OL-AS-5001.aspx

Olympus DS4000 recorder "new file" button broken

This is a classic: the 4-position-slide component (which includes the NEW button) is the weakness of the DS-4000. You need to get this replaced. If you are UK based, contact BES in Luton who will charge you circa GBP70 for the replacement.

Olympus DS4000 says Memory Error

I had several cases lke this with clients. One of the dictations is corrupted. It's the "one" here that matters. When you connect the DS-4000 to a PC, it appears in your "My Computer" as a Removable Drive. Browse this drive, and you will find the dictations in one of the folders (A, B, C etc...) or they might be scattered between folder depending on how your user records.
Try to copy dictation manually from that drive to the matching folders on the PC (by default My Documents-->DSSPlayer-->Messages-->FolderA, FolderB..., although you might have changed that).

At some stage one of the dictation files will refuse to copy/paste: that's the corrupted one; however should should be able to save the others. Once you have salvaged all but one dictation, you can do a format of the card. In fact, I suggest you chage the card, as corruption is usually a sign of worst things to come...

Using this procedure, at least only one dictation will need re-dictated.

I hope this helps.

Plug in the Olympus DS-4000 handheld and the screen blinks erratically busy and then nothing pulls off of the card to the dictation module.

The memory is corrupted. You can reformat but that will delete all your files. If you need to recover the files, try PC Inspector Smart Recovery. I have had good success with that. Then you must reformat, or the problem will return. The problem is caused from static shocks to the recorder.

Rewind.

You can rewind and playback only. You can only record by creating a new file.

The slide switch on my Olympus DS-4000 digital dictation recorder is too sensitive, and often goes to the "Record" position when it should be "Off." Any suggestions in how to correct...

The slide switch on your Olympus DS-4000 probably needs to be replaced. You can ship it to PCDictate.com to have your Olympus DS-4000 repaired. The repair will most likely run around $100,

However, my suggestion is that you upgrade to the Olympus DS-5000 digital voice recorder, the replacement for the DS-4000. It is a substantial upgrade and you will not regret it.

If you want to consider another brand, Philips has some great digital voice recorders. My favorite models are the Philips LFH-9600 and Philips LFH-9500 professional digital voice recorder.

The best place to purchase professional digital voice recorders is PCDictate.com. Your recorder will be shipped the same day your order and shipping is free.

Editing? Can dictation be paused, then go back part way and....

you can not do this with the Olympus ws-100, you need a dictation machine that has the editing function which allows you to easily insert, overwrite, partially erase files and continue on the same file, most of the digital dictation units have NEW FILE BUTTON , you will stay recording on the same file till you press new.
Look at Olympus DS-2300. Olympus DS-33300 or ds-4000.
