Question about DeLonghi EAM3400 Espresso Machine

1 Answer

Delonghi EAM3400 water ends up in tray will not come out of spout

I have tried soaking the infuser. And cleaning nozzles and inside. The machine is only about 3 yrs old. And not used frequently. The inside and nozzles were not dirty, but cleaned anyhow.
The machine made and expresso shot. Tried to make second expresso shot and the problem started. Did not add water, or open door, or move anything.

I had this problem, and have now finally figured it out and fixed it. the problem is that there is a solenoid valve sticking. i believe that the valve is used to relieve pressure after using the steam, and it vents the hot water directly to the tray. if you aren't diligent about descaling, or if there are water impurities, or if you use the machine infrequently, or for probably any number of other reasons, the valve can gum up and stick in the "open" position, continuously draining the water directly to the tray.

one easy way i've got my machine to work was to cycle steam on and off a few times, thereby signaling the valve to open/close, and unsticking the valve. you can see if it worked without wasting coffee by initiating a rinse cycle, and seeing if the water correctly comes out of the coffee nozzles.

if that doesn't work, you can disassemble the machine and tap on the valve. it has a square black solenoid ~1" square on top of a brass valve. it is mounted on the same bracket as the u-shaped heater. a few sharp raps on top may free up the valve.

if that doesn't work, remove the valve, and try to blow through it. if the valve is stuck open, air will go right through. hold the valve upright and tap it onto a hard surface (countertop, floor, etc.) try blowing through it again. when the valve is unstuck (and held in its normal operating position), you will not be able to blow through it.

once the valve is unstuck, run your machine through a descale process. that should take care of it.

Joe's solution worked brilliantly! Our Magnifica was having the same water problem as described above, but we followed joe's instructions and now it is working perfectly. The last time we took our machine in for repairs it cost $275 so we are very thankful that Joe posted these step by step instructions!

I had the same issue, but the solution was slightly different. My machine would not pump out enough steam to froth the milk and I assumed it was due to a leaking red O-Ring.

I managed to source a similar replacement from a bearing shop, but similar was not good enough. It fit in the space provided, but the ring itself was too thick and did not allow the diffuser to lift high enough and therefore the water spout did not meet the outlet. This meant water would spilling down the back of the door and into the drop tray.

Moral of the story, only use genuine parts....if you can find them!!

Joe - sorry for the ignorant question - but where exactly is the valve? is it part of the removable piece inside with the red tabs on the side? I dont see any brass valve or know where the u shaped heater is...thus my question......many thanks for any other tips as I try to solve this! Brad

Delonghi Magnifica 3300 doesn't make coffee, only wet grounds and water in the grounds container, everything else seems normal

Hi JB, not sure if you've junked your 3300 machine by now or had the problem fixed already. Nevertheless, allow me to share with owners of DeLonghi Magnifica Espresso machines who encounter similar problem to yours. Incidentally, mine is a Delonghi Magnifica 3200 which is very much the same as the 3300. Firstly, try to ascertain if the pump is working normally. When the machine is ready to brew coffee, turn ON the steam/hot water knob and see if it pumps normally and for more than 30secs at least. My machine could pump for short durations between 5secs to 20secs max before the water light came on. I checked the flow meter connection but is all seemed well. I noticed signs of water leak (dried up chalky water stains) where the steam wand exits the control panel. Upon opening up the control panel, I noticed a larger patch of dried up water stains on the wand valve assembly. Bought a set of steam wand assembly replacement and to replace the leaking one. It's been some six month now and I'm enjoying my daily cuppa again. Btw, my Delonghi Magnifica 3200 has been serving me well for 10 years! Apart from the steam wand replacement and a faulty micro-switch, I only had to carry out the usual descaling and replacing worn out O-rings.

I had this problem last night. The infuser was stuck down too low and the tray wouldn't slide in. I got the solution from FIXYA, and it worked for me.

First make sure machine is off at power, then put just the coffee grounds collector and not the whole tray back into place, gently close the door, and then turn the machine back on. At first I couldn't close the door, but I fgured that the grounds collector was a bit too low, so just put something in there to hold it up while I shut the door. Turn the machine back on at power and HEY PRESTO, it all started up again, and then the infuser moved back into correct position.

Make sure you have a cup handy just incase water starts to rinse out.

Hope this helps

Water ends up in the tray

Have you checked the brew group screen? I am assuming that this is a super automatic machine, and by pressing a button it grinds and brews? If yes then the only other problem would be in the brew unit.

DeLonghi EAM3400 Magnifica with broken steam spout

No offense to Irishwarrior but the answer to your question is yes, you can buy a replacement. Call Delonghi. The inner sleeve has a flat spot on the back that matches up with the steam wand. No glue, and o ring holds it in place, either the o ring is worn out or the hole in the bottom of the sleeve is partially clogged creating more pressure than the resistance of the o ring. A paper clip straightened out will "****" it out. If you need to replace the whole steam wand arm you would want to order a new "tap" valve. Delonghi can give you the # of an authorized service center where you can order one (Delonghi will not sell you "internal" parts)

The machinge keeps asking to insert brewing unit but it seems to

The infuser does go in at a slight angle "11:45" ish. Be sure the tabs on the sides of the infuser "pop" back out when it's in place. Try unplugging the machine if all else fails and it will do a self diagnostic. You could also call Delonghi tech support.
