How to replace the connector for the power and foot pedal of a Kenmore sewing machine 117-552? I'm replacing the connector and part of the cords because they're old and damaged.
There are 2 cords, each with 3 wires, black, white, and green. 1 cord is for a 3 prong plug, the other cord is for the foot pedal. The 2 cords merge into 1 connector with 3 slots labeled Red, Black, and White. (no green). Currently, both green wires are cut and not used. The black wires are tied together and screwed into the slot labeled Black. Each white wire has its own slot so one goes into the White slot and the other white wire goes into the Red slot?
There is a 3-prong horizontal plug below the motor in the back of the machine . This is where the power and foot pedal plug in.
Does this sound correct? Why is the green wire cut and not used?

The wiring for the older Kenmore is simple. The light switch completes the connection to the light. If the foot pedal has failed or connection loose where the wire attaches from the foot-pedal the motor will not run.
Also if the brushes in the motor are worn or failing to contact the motor internally the motor will not run.
With light on and pedal partially depressed attempt to activate motor to determine if brush connection are faulty. If the motor reacts at all the brushes will likely need to be replaced.
No success borrow a foot pedal from a friend or sewing center to determine if the pedal control is faulty.
It looks like your power cord and foot pedal are incorporated into one unit, and you'll have to replace the foot pedal to get it. You can get it for $30 at sewing parts online, http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/singer-3116-simple-sewing-machine-parts.aspx?gclid=CLTXmrLC18ECFeHm7AodBioADg, and you can also get them from eBay by doing a search on Singer Simple 3116.
it could be the motor or the power cord or the foot pedal, check to make sure the power cord and the foot pedal are connected correctly to the machine.if they are then the machine and power cord and foot pedal need to be checked
it could be different things
have you checked to make sure the plug is correctly in the machine
one time I was sewing on my necchi electronic machine & it for some reason was going slow like you mentioned & so I started checking different thing & found the cord to the foot pedal was laying in side the foot pedal & it couldn't go any faster untill I moved the cord out of the way
it could also be the motor
& also the power cord & foot pedal
it's possible it needs to be serviced since it's been sitting up so long & since it's sewing at a snails pace
Buy a new foot pedal for it, probably one of the electrical components inside the foot has failed.
There are Kenmore footcontrols for sale on www.sewingpartsonline.com. You could email them to check its right for your model if it isn't listed.
Obviously I'm assuming that you are in USA with 110 Voltage and that is what your machine is. If not and your country is 220V, you would need to source it from a reseller in your own country or another with the same voltage.
These cord/pedal sets are available at http://www.sewingstyle.com/White-Sewing-Foot-Control.html make sure that shape of the connector looks like that of your machine.
You only need to replace the cord if it has been damaged. It will cost less if you just take the machine , cord and control to a local technician and have him just replace the foot control. Let him test it first. A generic foot control should cost less than $30. sewman7
