Check the BIOS configuration to see if it deects the hard drive.
When you boot up the Samsung, does the hard drive spin up, if it does not spin up or makes a clicking sound the the hard drive is faulty.
To get your laptop operating again, replace the hard disk and install Windows on the new hard disk.

Sorry I miss read your query, I thought you referred to the hard drive in the Samsung.

Is the external hard drive an external USB hard drive?

Is the power adapter for the external hard drive a separate unit and is the power LED on the hard drive on?

When the external hard drive spin up and does it make a clicking sound? If it doesn't spin or makes a clicking sound then the hard drive is faulty.

Try connecting the external hard drive to another computer and if it does not show up on this computer then it is faulty. If it see this external drive then it is OK and there is a problem with the Samsung.

Get back to me with the answers to my questions and any error messages.

You could have a faulty USB hard drive adapter case or a faulty hard drive.

To determine which item is faulty, you need to identify the type of hard drive ie. IDE or SATA.

To test the hard drive, remove the hard drive from the enclosure and connect it to a different USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a computer. If it still not detected or started then it is faulty.

To test the hard drive a different way, insert the hard drive into a desktop computer as a slave drive. If the computer's BIOS doesn't detect the drive etc. then it is faulty. (If the desktop doesn't support SATA devices and the hard drive is a SATA drive then you can't test it).

The USB method is my preferred test method.

This is likely due to power consumption, if a hub doesn't have it's own power adapter, then it is drawing bus power from your computer, and will not have enough power to drive larger devices.

did you turn of your computer or click on remove hardware safelty link before diconecting this external hard drive if it shows how much is being used it is being recognised you could run the chkdsk utility
click start control panel administrive tools, computer management ,disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now, start might or might not schedule this task when restart
do not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage your computer
then defragment your hard drive
click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you should see a yellow question mark?
right click to reinstall drivers
make sure the lead/s that attach to this drive have a secure seating and are not bad/faulty the light on only tells that its getting power it might not be getting enough power you might test the lead/s or
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again, sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
hope this helps

How do I delete all the info backed up on my irocks external hard drive?

Usually hard drive disks are erasable so long as was an an empty space. However, the type of setting chosen during data encription causes the situation of erasability. For example, using an external harddrive disk as back up media storage media has specific requirements. The computer provides an integral means of least being compromised where data permanent encription may have been the options available during backup copying. The compoter provides the procedures of recording data into any connected external devices. Once the external device is reconnected to the computer, the options of requesting the user to either erase what has already been copied becomes one of the several displayable promps. Also, backup disks usually on connection to the computer assumes a necessity to restore to functioning mode. However, a least malfunctioning computer would simply display prompts asking the computer user to perform the most recent backup, or disregard because of least disfunction recognised from the system. Attempting is erase what has already been recorded becomes appropiate whenever the computer recognises any curroption of the files. A prompt is display asking to fix errors soon after connection. The computer user simple chooses to restore to default functionality the external hardrive. Amongs the options usually provided of the program prompt are format, delete, restore, or backup computer files once connection is recognised. keep in mind that, an external hard disk may be default rrecordable proving no options of erasing. Refer to the hard disk drive user guide as reference to achieve the process. Also, the user guide would have specified if the device is capable of alternations or not.
