Try taking the paper tray all the way out, look for gack back there, Then lift the scanner table up on hydraulic arm, look under there. Look inside the back cover. Even if you find no paper or jam sometimes just doing all these things will get the dumb thing to work! I called Brother and it worked for me.

Open the back cover to remove any paper jam on your printer, follow on it. Maybe there's a paper inside hanging in the ruler, take a look.
