If you are installing an early version of xp it doesnt have sata support therefore you will have to either get a newer version of it or you will have to get yourself an ide drive to install it onto.

ok what you may have to do is pull the side of the case off from your computer and do this only when it is turned off !! unplug the hard disk, there will be 2 connections in it. It will be a small black box on the lower right hand side. then plug them back in. with the side off still turn the computer back on and see if it loads up.Should it load up to windows all good, If you still get the same message, turn it back off unplug the mains power lead from the wall socket, on the big circuit board inside the case you will spot a large watch battery (approx 1 inch round button cell) take that out for 5-10 mins. then replace the battery and reconnect the power supply and start the computer again. hopefully that will work for you.

Turn the computer off.
Turn the computer on, and press <DEL> to enter BIOS SETUP.
Ensure that the hard-drive is "enabled", and set to 'AHCI'.
Save the BIOS settings.

Tip

INSTALLING WINDOWS XP ON A SATA HARD DRIVE

SATA HARD DRIVE ? XP INSTALLATION
The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP.
The FIX.
Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.
If enabling the SATA in the BIOS does not allow the computer to boot up with SATA hard drive then change the BIOS back to what it was previously.

Windows XP needs the SATA textmode drivers for it to recognise the SATA hard drive. This can be downloaded from this link:
http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=2391
You will need the SATA AHCI driver

You must then burn the drivers to a CD or copy to a USB stick. When installing windows XP, you will be prompted "press F6" to load additional drivers, at this point the install will ask you to specify where these drivers can be found, if you direct it to the USB or CD Rom (USB is better to avoid disc swapping), it should find the drivers needed and then recognise your hard drive.

The above is a bit academic though, because this does not appear to support Windows XP according to the downloads options on the link

No, you do not need to install a new driver as long as that is the same sata hard disk tha used to work in your Gateway computer. Just boot into your windows xp installation cd and let the setup continue.

Should you need further assistance, please let me know.

Gateway M465-e laptop won't detect hard drive for XP install

The Gateway M465-e is only compatible the SATA hard disk drives. If the drive you are using is not a SATA drive, then it will not be able to work with your hard drive.
