2 Answers

Hello I have a T20 thinkpad. When I turn it on it goes to the desktop but does not give me any icons or anything that I can work with. I tried to start it in safe mode and it looks like it is about to work then just says safemode but wont go beyond that. Can someone help me? PS it is a different computer than the one I am using to ask. Jose

Did you do any change on the T20 since the last boot?

Please let me know via email.

When you boot up look for boot without network.

This will free up some resource.

If able to get to the desktop screen.

DO

start
run
type cmd
c:
dir

check for the size free.

Compare to the total size of the drive.

====

from c:

type in

chkdsk c: /f /r

Pick Y for start chkdsk on next reboot.

Reboot laptop.

This will take long time.

Look for any error(s).

Chkdsk should take care of any disk error.

Please let me know how it turns out.

    Ok. Do you has
    IBM Thinkpad T20 Floppy Drive 05K9207, 08K9607, N533 inside the T20 laptop?
    Please see pic at

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/IBM-Thinkpad-T20-F...

    Plan B is make a boot-able floppy side can copy chkdsk on to the floppy.

    Set your T20 to boot order to floppy,hard drive...........

    Boot to A:

    c:

    chkdsk c:

    and let chkdsk do the scan.

    =======

    The last option is buy utility like Symantec Norton

    =======

    At this point you have three routes to go.

    Locate the official IBM internal floppy drive,set boot order to floppy 1st,hard drive 2nd and follow my direction that I posted before.

    =====

    Route two is a lot easier buy you will need to spend money on order an utility software /shareware.

    The expensive is Symantec Norton 360 or Norton Utility.

    The low end is pick some utility off eBay for under $10 + shipping.

    Ask you techie friend and see do they have any disk scan/fix utility.

    ===
    Send the laptop for disk data recovery.

    This will cause you major cash.

    Jose

    Can you get into the CMOS setting when you power on this laptop.

    Go into the CMOS setting and look for boot order.

    The current order has LAN on top of the list.

    Move it down below CD and Harddrive and save settings.

    This laptop most likely been in service in a larger cooperation that demand conform and standard setting in their working environment.

    Give the CMOS setting corrected and try again.

    You may add more comment later. I will follow up on it.

Hello Jose' -- I can assist you. right click on your mouse or mousepad and then click on "personalize". What you are looking for is task bar and start menu and then "customize notification icons". Once there you can set your computer up any way you like. good luck.

Laptop Not booting - No Screen

Clean your memory card, or reseat it. Clean the edge connector with soft eraser if reseating doesn't solve it. Do this when battery is disconnected, completely turn off and no other power supply is connected to it. If not maybe ram failed already. This is the first step before going to anything. For additional instructions try to find it in youtube. Post us some update.tnx

ThinkPad T20 2647....BSOD at startup...before asking for password

Hi,

If you can attach your hardisk to any Desktop Windows OS computer, you can use the "Check Disk" by windows to check the problem of you laptop hardisk, usually using USB Eclosure will help you connect your Laptop Hardisk to Desktop Computer. Just use "Check Disk" utility to check the Drive, you can do this by clicking MY COMPUTER, then Right Click on your Laptop Drive then PROPERTIES, then TOOLS and click CHECK NOW, then place a check mark on the "AUTOMATICALLY FIX SYSTEM ERRORS" then start fixing, after that, then put back your laptop hardisk on your laptop and see if its works.

I would say the hard drive is failing. But need to run a diagnostic on it to be sure.

If you would like to know where to get the ibm / hitachi hard drive diagostic let me know. It's free for download and you can get a bootable ISO image to burn onto cd. Allowing you to boot from cd in order to test the drive.

As far as replacing, you should be good with a 60gb or 80gb. Did it orginally have a 20gb in it? I would say for most people, 60-80 is way more than enough. Unless you have a ton of music or pictures.
