The spinning arm on dish washer (ADP 8540) is not working

The dishwasher works through a cycle but the dishes are not cleaned.
The spinning arm at the bottom of the dishwasher does not seem to be spinning either.

The jets on the arm are not clogged so why else would the arm not be spinning?

  • Kelly Aug 04, 2009

The problem is not fixed by cleaning out the spray arms and I have inspected the filter at the bottom of dishwasher.

  • Kelly Aug 06, 2009

I suspect there is no water coming into the spinning arms at all - any reasons for this?

I suspect now that water is not enetering the dishwasher - How do I check if the solenoid is opening and letting water into the spinning arms?

Have removed the inlet pump to test.

Have you checked the Inlet hose if it was kinking? This might stop the power supply from reaching the washer.

You may want to check the nozzle/spray for the water for debris or clogs. Check the filter if it needs cleaning and have the drain cleaned out. While at it inspect the spinning arm for loose connections or anything that may physically stop it from moving. Also check the heating element, you water may not heat up completely which may cause it to not clean the dishes efficiently.

Water is forced through the spray arms of a dishwasher by the unit's pump and motor assembly. The force of the water propels the spray arms, spraying water and detergent onto the dishes on the dishrack. Depending on your model, you may have only one spray arm located on the bottom of the dishwasher, or you may also have an upper spray arm located at the top of the unit above the upper dishrack. There may or may not also be a plastic tower extending from the center of the lower spray arm, whose purpose is to spray an additional blast of water at the dishes.
Remove the lower dishrack from the unit. Reach into your dishwasher and spin the lower spray arm. Take note of whether or not the arm moves freely or if its movement is restricted. It should not be restricted in its path of motion. Now gently pull up on an end of the spray arm. The spray arm should be free to wobble up and down. Next carefully examine the spray arm seams. If they have split or are damaged, the dishes may not receive the amount of water pressure required to fully clean the dishes. What's more, if water is in fact spraying out of the spray arm from its seams, it is possible that it can cause your dishwasher to leak.
If your dishwasher has a spray tower, pull up on it as far as it will go and then let it fall back down. Again, this movement should not be restricted. It should be a fluid and smooth motion. Also, unscrew the spray tower and examine it for any debris or foreign objects. Remove any that you find.
Gain access to the upper spray arm by removing the upper dishrack. Perform the same tests for the upper spray arm as you just did for the lower spray arm. Keep in mind that the upper spray arm may not wobble as much as the lower spray arm.
On a final note, some dishwasher models have a water tube that meets up with the upper spray arm once the upper dishrack is pushed back. It is a good idea to check to make sure this tube is aligning properly with the upper spray arm.

Dishwasher spray arms are removeable. You can take them out and clean them, or you can take them out to replace with new ones.

Usually - an arm not spinning that has no obstructions in the spray nozels has a water flow problem.
Either the recirculating pump's impeller is damaged - or the sump screen/chopper is clogged with debris.

Every dishwasher has some type of filter to keep large food particles and foreign objects away from the pump assembly:

Most modern dishwashers have self-cleaning filters that don't need any routine cleaning.

Some have filters in the bottom of the dishwasher that you need to periodically clean. You don't need any tools to remove the filter, and cleaning it is easy. Consult your owner's manual to determine which type you have and its maintenance requirements.
If your filter is clogged, it may be causing the cleaning problem.
If you spin it by hand, and there are no unusual noises or rough movement - the bearings/bushings are not at issue. If it wobbles or seems loose - the bushings/bearings need replacement.

Is the problem at both arms? or only the bottom?

Some machines rotate between top and bottom - only one works at a time.

Check the screen for debris... its the most likely cause of flow restriction.

Thanks :D

It sounds to me like your facing a clog somewhere probably right before the spray arms are fed.
Check that if you are sure the solenoid is opening and water is getting into the lines.

The dish washer is taking ages to wash and it not clean ing dishes well

ok so If your dishwasher has worked fine in the past but, suddenly, your dishes aren't clean after the dishwasher completes all cycles:
1) Check your water heater's temperature dial to be sure it hasn't been changed recently.
2) Be sure dishes haven't prevented the detergent dispenser from opening properly during the wash cycles or kept the spray arms from turning, the lower arm from rising, or the spray from reaching the upper rack's dishes.
3) During the wash cycle, listen to the spray arm spinning inside. If it seems to be spinning poorly, clean out the spray holes in the spray arm(s) with a stiff piece of wire; wait for the machine to cool, and then remove the spray arm(s) by unscrewing the hub cap and lifting the arm(s) off

Top rack washer arm isn't spinning and therefore not cleaning dishes in top rack, bottom works fine

You can replace the whole top assembly. And before you run the cycles again, try putting a cup of Tang (dry) orange juice through the cycle without any dishes or get some Dishwasher Magic and you'll have a sparkling new dishwasher once again! hope this helps you!

Washer arm not working

If your dishes are getting clean, then your problem is a "feture" not a failure. The LG LDS5811 has a Verio motor/check valve that switches between cleaning the upper dishes and then the lower. Depending on when you open the door, one arm will not be spinning.
All the presure is routed either to the lower or upper arm, so it really does help - especially with a water conserving model like the 5811.
Good Luck!

First clean the sprayer arm of all debris. In the back of most dishwashers there is a screen on the bottom that is often full of junk, debris and other stuff from dishes not being scraped off.

Clean that screeen off.

Run vinegar (1 cup) for a full cycle to help break down the lime and other build ups.

Check sprayer arm for debris and other objects. carefully pick it out with a small needle or sometimes even a nail works.

Try running dishes again to see if this helps.

I had an old machine with a similiar problem & I found that food had somehow entered into the arm that spins & sprays out water. The food blocked somewhat the holes which of course means less cleaning.
