How do you preset radio stations on a 02 Saturn SL? I have tried tuning to a selected station and holding a preset button for 3-5 seconds and it doesn't work.

If it is aftermarket, some one might not have hook the memory wire up. But most will preset, it will just be lost when you turn off the car. If it is hooked up right, after market or factory, it is an internal failure. Replace the radio.

Will not hold preset stations

One of the wires (often yellow or orange) is a constant voltage source that retains memory with the radio turned off. This wire may not have been connected correctly or maybe not connected at all.

How do you assign preselect numbers to radio stations

You can assign radio station presets on your stock VW radio by tuning to the radio station you would like to preset, and then holding down one of the preset number buttons until the radio beeps. You will now be able to access the station by pressing the preset button.

Won't remember settings

Your memory wire(12volt constant) and accessory (12volt switched) are in opposite positions. I have seen this happen with aftermarket wiring harnesses for european vehicles (mercedes, audi and VW). Switch the wires.

Cant program car radio

Sorry to say, but you will have to pull the unit and locate the wiring to it. Have a tester for dc voltage and find the power wire that goes on and off with your key. Once that wire has been identified, Find a wire that has 12vdc all the time even with the key off and go to the one that went off and on and cut it. The wire going to the unit strip and splice to 12vdc that is on all the time. Cap and tape the wire you cut that leads away from the unit.

Memory/settings non functional

I'm not sure if car radios have internal batteries, but that's what keeps preset memory on home radios. In any case, preset memory requires a small continous electric current, and if there is none coming into the radio then when you switch the car off it will reset. Hope you find something along that line
