SOURCE: Onkyo TX-SR500 Dolby Digital problem

I just read over the problem you were having with your Onkyo TX-SR500 receiver. It sound like the unit needs to be setup for all five channels.Sence your symptom says the diplay shows Dolby D3/2.1. According to the owners manual with the remote control look for speaker setup whin the button is pressed the current speaker setup will be shown in the display. Press the preset/adjustment<> to change the current setting to five speakers. the listening mode will automatically change according to the number of channels you selected. Hope this helps. SOURCE: Onkyo TX-DS474 Receiver shuts down after Standby mode.

It's going into a protect mode. The amp is probably shorted out. Disconnect the spkrs and turn it on. If it still shuts off, it's the amp, if not, it's the spkrs.

SOURCE: ONKYO TX-DS939 (sound and heat/fan issues)

This sounds like the amp is seeing too small an impedence load. In other words, the amp is expecting to see an 8ohm load and is being presented a 4 or 2 ohm load. This will force the amp to work really hard and generate excessive heat. Does the amp generate sound at all? ever? If not, then you probable have a situation with high frequency oscuillations that you can not hear. This means that the amp is sending out a lot of power to the speakers that the crossovers are shunting to ground. Without seeing the output of the amp with a scope, I can not confirm this. This is not a problem that will be solved remotely. Bring the unit to a shop and request that the output be examined using a scope to check the waveforms. I suspect that a bad feedback look internally is causing the generation of the high frequency signals.

Keep us posted.

SOURCE: How do I connect my outside speakers to play?

The onkyo should still have a speaker A/B selector in the menu.
Check on the back panel for speaker A/B.
If it has or you decide to use Zone 2 you will need to set the sound programme to "stereo" so the rears and centre do not work.
You can still use a digital source.
You should be able to display the amp's menu on the screen.
Hook up "monitor out" (Yellow) via RCA connector to one of the "A/V inputs" (yellow) on the tv, this will show you a display of the menu and will make it eaiser to navigate.

If Zones are turned on or, if a mobile device connected to the Front Input is charging (MHL), the HYBRID STANDBY indicator won't light. See the TX NR515 owner's manual at http://filedepot.onkyousa.com/Files/own_manuals/TX-NR515_English.pdf for more info.

Receiver is on but can't get any sound.

Try initializing the receiver. Although it will erase all your settings and presets . Sometimes this fixes problems. The cpu gets confused. While on hold down the vcr button and press the standby button. The display will read "CLEAR".

No power

When an amp won't come out of standby mode when you try to turn it on at the receiver, there is usually a problem in the output section (shorted outputs) and the amp may also display something like "protect" on the display if it has one. There could be lots of other causes but outputs are the first thing I'd look at.

If its brand new, then return it for a refund.
