So, we are currently using Microsoft Publisher as the web building software. For some reason when we try to publish the website to the FTP server it doesn't work. Before I get into the steps you might consider trying one thing first. Check to see whether Microsoft Publisher is a program added as an exception within the firewall: within the control panel go to the Security tab, click the Windows Firewall tab, then "change settings", then click the Exceptions tab and "Add Program", you can then see if Microsoft Publisher is listed and if so click OK and if not Browse for it.

Once this process is done Richard can show you how we publish to the web: Microsoft Publisher, File, Publish to the Web, then type the address in the save as box. It should then prompt the user to enter the user name and password for the FTP server. Then make sure you are in the public.html folder and save as "index". (Replace the old index file.)

There's really no reason why the program shouldn't post to the web especially because Richard's computer logs in to the ftp server and allows the user to navigate throughout the public and private folders within the web host.

Also note: whenever an update is made, we change it within the microsoft publisher program and republish the file to the web. Instead of updating the html code published online, we update it in Publisher and resave it. Publisher then converts the code to HTML and we then replace the existing file

this is what i am trying to do but its not working, any suggestions, thank you

If you're uploading using an FTP client i.e. cuteftp, filezilla do the following to upload your html:

  • Use the connection manager, it will ask for the domain, insert your domain
  • It will ask for a user name, provide the username you used to log into
  • It will ask for a password, provide the password you used to log into
  • Once connected, you should see your local folders on the left and the network folders on the right
  • Drag the files you wish to upload to the network folder; you should see a queue open up and a progress bar upload the file
  • Your file(s) should be uploaded and accessible by typing in your domain name in a browser, if you've set up a default file i.e. www.domain, typing in your domain name in the browser should show your home page
Please post back if you have any questions.

A few things you need. Publisher will FTP to your web site ? ?
Who's hosting your site... not your name. If is your hosting company, you need to check out the settings needed to put into Publisher to FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to your site and the correct name of the main web folder like public_html . You need the login name and password to your web page.
