Slow internet speeds

sometimes if you open device manager and expand network adapters, then right-click on the wireless adapter and click properties, on the advanced tab, every manufacturer writes their drivers differently, but some have a setting that is something like compatibility and the choices are faster and more compatible (you have to choose one or the other). Only change one setting at a time, write down what you change, what it started at, and where you set it, then close the property window and test. If it makes it worse, set it back before trying another setting.

8mbs through router, but 20mbs when removed

First make sure that you are getting the good speed from the modem itself.
Connect your computer directly to the modem and check the Internet speed from the modem.
If you are getting the good speed from the modem then the modem is working fine.
Now connect the modem and the computer to the router.
Open the setup page of the router.
On the setup page you will find the option MTU.
It might be disabled or AUTO. Change it to enable or Manual.
Below that you will see the size. It must be set to 1500. Change it to 1365. Click Save settings at the bottom.
Now unplug the power to the router and modem both. Plug in the power to the modem first.
Wait for 1 minute.
Plug in the power to the router.
Wait for 1 minute and now try to access the Internet.
Check the speed. There will be some improvement.
You can also try to upgrade the Firmware of the router.

My netgear router will not connect through wireless side only

Sorry I should have clicked on Full View befroe I submitted a comment.
Try resetting the Netgear back to the default settings. There is a reset button at the back of the Netgear rpress it untill the LEDs flash then release the button and then configure the router again.
Open a browser and enter this URL
The login name is admin and PW is password.
Change the default password.
In the wireless settings change the SSID and turn off SSID broadcast.
Setup encryption use WAP2 or WAP
For added security enable MAC address filtering.
Then configure the computer's wireless card with the router's SSID and encryption settings.
Also check the wireless channels of the access points/routers in your area and set your router to an unused channel (or one that has the weakest signal strength) so you get less interference with your router.
Also move your wireless router away from walls and if possible raise it higher to improve the signal to your computers.

I have intermittant but persistant loss of internet connection on my belkin 54 (only after 4pm!)

If it is only from a certain time of the day I would strongly suspect one of three things

1. You may have a torrent client set to start downloading at around that time. If you have change the time schedule.

2. You may have a security program set to run. If so then the same as above change it.

3. This one is quite important. If you run your wireless router without any security settings. Then somebody might just be coming home around that time an hijacking your internet without your knowledge. If you Dont have it set for any secure mode do it as soon as possible and also change and passwords on the router etc.

4. Your ISP is engaging in DPI type throttling or som other sever bandwidth limiting. With only one computer hooked up do a quick search for "broadband speed test" assuming you are on DSL , cable etc
and try the speed tests . If they come back nowhere near what you are paying for call your ISP and kick some...
Dont forget that speed tests are just a guide so if its anywhere close to that you pay for then there is not much anybody can do to improve it.

an ISP issue

Change settings

The router ports autosense the speed of the device that you are connecting to it. If your xbox is set to run 100 mb the ports will run 100, if the xbox is set for 10 then thats what it will run. Test the speed of your internet connection with a wired pc and then test directly into your modem and see what speeds that you get. You can test your speed here:

Internet Connection Problem With Router

On your router's admin page, look for MTU. Set the size to 1492 and save the settings. Then power cycle your router. If that didn't help improve your connection speed, you need to update the firmware of your router to the latest one. After updating the firmware, perform hard reset on the router by pressing the reset button at the back of the router for 30 seconds then unplug the power. Wait for 30 second before you plug it back in. That should fix it.

Netgear router dg834gt

Have look in the router settings for the actual internet connection speeds, as these are a more true reading than the speed check as the speeds can vary at different times of the day and 2 or 3 speed checks can bring different results. your actual connection speed that is showing in the routers settings is the connection you are getting from your ISP. If you are with BT they usually recommend using their latest routers, why i'm not sure, as the only thing i have noted is that the MTU is set at 1500 (Maximum Transmition Units)and in other routers the MTU is automatically set at 1493, so look for the MTU setting and up it if necassary, but not above 1500, also double check all the settings, even put the bt router back in and see if speeds improve, if, you know the BT router is set up purposly for faster connection speeds. Also try checking your speed at a speed test site at a quieter time of day, you will also see different speed check sites give you different speed results.
