Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

My freezer will not go through the harvest cycle. The ice tray fills with water, just will not harvest. I have continuity through what I assume is the temp sensor when cold, but where is that supposed to send voltage to, and what does the small set of contacts do when you push up on the bin handle telling it not to make any more ice. I can see it's supposed to send voltage somewhere, but where. I have voltage through my plugs, just can't get the ice maker to harvest.

THE HARVEST CYCLE begins when the freeze algorithm (programmed into the electronic control board) has been satisfied and the sensor arm is out or fully extended. If the arm is in the “in” position when harvest is to begin, a delay of 3 minutes will be added once the arm is moved to the extended position to allow for drawer type ice buckets to be removed for this amount of time without starting a harvest cycle. This 3 minute delay will begin again if the arm goes back to the “in” position anytime during the delay period. This arm is spring loaded to go to the “out” position unless it is being held in the “in” position by an obstacle such as an ice cube.MORE

An ice maker has 3 basic tasks:
1. Call for water.
2. Freeze.
3. Harvest.
Then the cycle repeats. There will always be some sensors that determine timing of those tasks. Home units usually have a bin level sensor (often an arm that's lifted as the bin fills) that can be locked in the up position to disable the ice maker.

If it's calling for water but not freezing, make sure the condenser is clean. (Sometimes they look clean but are plugged in the middle.) It has to get down to nearly 0 degrees to efficiently make ice, if it's not getting cold enough you may need a tech to figure out why.

If there's ice in the tray but it's not harvesting, clean the tray, hard water deposits can make the cubes stick in the tray.

New icemaker will work manually, water and cycle but will not fill after it dumps ice.

Try vacuuming the condenser coils of lint. The icemaker resets and harvests by a thermostat. If the freezer isn't cold enough it may not reset for a harvest. The icemaker could also be just bad.

I worked on a hoshizaki km-500mae when i turn it on the first cycle it makes good ice but after the first cycle it makes little pieces. why?

time the cycle. if it is only running about 5 minutes and going into harvest, look for sump loosing water. Look at where the unit drains (like a floor drain) while the unit is running to see how much, if any water is draining. does not take much to make an early harvest. also, sump may not be filling up completely but with just enough water to satisfy the float.

Ice Maker fails on occasions to dump ice before water is dispensed

monitor the cycle as it is filling water does it over fill or is there a seepage that continue to drip, it could be the water valve. Also do you hear the tray making noise as it tries to dump the ice "the harvest cycle" try to watch it to see if it is a mechanical gearing problem

Ice cube tray does not fill up water feeding tube is frozen.

The problem you are having is caused by water leaking past the=> MJX42111401 Water Inlet Valve Change the MJX42111401 Water Inlet Valve and this will solve the water freezing between ice harvest. On most refrigerators this part can be found on the back of refrigerator and near floor, Let me know if you have other questions, Thanks Sea Breeze

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
Often the reason ice makers slow or stop ice production is because the freezer compartment has gradually warmed up above 17 Deg F and the ice maker thermostat will not start an ice harvest cycle. What causes this gradual warming is usually the result of either an evaporator fan running slow or an automatic defrost circuit problem caused by a fault defrost timer/control defrost heating element or defrost thermostat / thermistor.
You can use this manual to troubleshoot the ice maker:
http://applianceassistant.com/pdf/inDoorIceSystem.pdf
or
https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/8527f904cc8ea8cd85256b5800672333/$FILE/4322658A.pdf
Note that jumpering T to H requires the ice maker thermostat to sense a termp of 14 - 16 Deg F for the ice harvest cycle to start. If by jumpering T - H under the ice maker front cover the ice maker does not cycle then either the freezer compartment is too warm or the ice maker thermostat is bad.
If it cycles and does not add water... then the inlet water valve solenoid has failed or the ice maker module is not supplying power to the inlet water valve.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Nothing is cool no ice or anything but the fan in the freezer and the fan bottom rear are working continuously

If your icemaker is producing small cubes, hollow cubes, huge cubes, or a solid slab of ice, one of the first things you want to check is the fill level. And it's not as difficult as you might think. (Hey, the hard part's wrenching that bottle out of Pookie's little fingers!) Unplug the refrig, pull the icemaker - usually one screw underneath, either 2 more or hooks above the cube mold - and unplug it. Take it to your sink and melt out any cubes with hot water. Then plug it and the refrig. back in, leaving it unattached from the freezer wall.

Manually start a 'harvest cycle' (see below) and hold Pookie's bottle under the fill tube. You'll have to wait a few minutes, because the water enters near the end of one complete rotation of the cube ejector, which constitutes a 'harvest cycle'. Regardless your type of icemaker, you're looking for 130-150 cc's, with most working best around 145cc's, but anywhere in this range should work OK.

(When replacing your icemaker with a new one, always check and adjust the water fill level this way too. You'll save yourself a lot of trouble.)

Ice Maker water keeps running

Bad I/M, won't shut off after harvest and continues to restart cycle. Heater in I/M should warm up thermostat after first harvest and stop unit from recycling.

Ice maker problems

the heater on the ice maker has gone bad the easiest way to fix is to replace ice maker.the heater is on the bottom of the maker and heats tray up to harvest ice if it dont the ice will stick. But try taking maker out and cleaning it real good with a light spongee (Scrubee)
let it dry then spray some a light coat of pam (or similar) into ice bins and try that ahrd water will eat the coating off the bins

Water overran ice maker tray

It could be one of two things. The fill cycle could be too long causing the water to overflow or the icemaker may not be ejecting all the cubes out of the tray. A normal fill cycle is very short. Maybe 6 seconds long. So I would check and see how long the fill cycle is and when it stops check and see how much the tray is filled with water. I would also check and make sure that all the ice cubes are ejecting next time you hear it harvest.
