Question about HP PhotoSmart C4480 All-in-One Printer InkJet

C5180 not printing red.

Hi, I was getting the ink system failure message and the OK/Help/Plug in worked fine. Now all of the cartridges are not working. Lots of yellow and green but no red. All of the cartridges are new. Any suggestions.

Replace the ink cartridges as the ink might have finished in refill of its cartridges

My HP photosmart C5180 has a Ink System Failure Error code 0xc18a0201. I tried the master reset - holding the ok and help buttons down while turning the printer on and off. That worked long enough to print...


The ink system failure message has a chance to be fixed or it may be a permanent issue. It
can be pointing toward a firmware failure in the printer and if that is the case the
following steps should fix it.
Press and hold the “*” key. Press the “#” key and release both keys.
Display should say “Enter Special Key Combo”
Press and release in sequence the "1”, “2” and “3” buttons.
Display should say “Support” and display the FW rev (something like R0631R)
Mine reads R0631M
. Press and release the right arrow button until the display says “System Configuration
Menu”.
Press and release the “OK” button.
Display should say “Hardware failure status”. If not there already, Arrow Key over to
“Hardware failure status”,
Press and release the “OK” button.
Display should say “Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear”.
Press and release the “OK” Button. Message changes to “Hardware failure status Cleared.
Press Cancel to continue”.
Press and release the “CANCEL” button as many times as necessary, so that, either the
“Welcome to Photosmart Express” screen appears, or, the “Ink System Failure” screen appears.

As a side note if the printer cannot overcome the error the only printer still sold that takes 02 cartridges is the Photosmart C8180.

THAT 0X ERROR IS AN INK SYTEM FAILURE IT MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED FROM THE REFURBED CARTRIDGES... THE HP WILL WORK WITH THE REFURBS FOR A FEW TIMES BEFORE REJECTING THE CARTRIDGE OR CAUSING AN 0x ERROR. THE UNIT NEEDS TO GO THRU AN ELABORATE INK SYSTEM RESET. OR HAVE THE PRINTER REPLACED

My HP Photosmart C5180 printer keeps coming up with an error message 'Ink System Failure. Does anybody know what is needed to solve the problem.

The "Ink System Failure" error is causes by air in the ink feed tubes. We have a step by step guide purging the air from the feed tubes posted on our web site. Ink failure error HP C5180. just replaced all ink cartridges.


1. Get the unit into the “Support Menu” by following the steps below according with the product, see the table below:

A. - Press and hold the “left arrow” key.
B. - Press the “Setup” key and release both keys.
Display should say “Enter Special Key Combo”
C. - Press and release the “OK” button.

Press and release the right arrow button until the display says “System Configuration Menu”. (on C8100 use Touch Screen)
2. Press and release the “OK” button.
3. Display should say “Hardware failure status”. If not there already, Arrow Key over to “Hardware failure status”,

5. Display should say “Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear”.
6. Press and release the “OK” Button. Message changes to “Hardware failure status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue”.

HP C5180 All-In-One Printer HARD RESET:
Hold down HELP + OK button and unplug printer
Hold down HELP + OK button again as you plug the printer back in.
Then power it on, if it doesn’t power on automatically.
Be Safe: keep holding the buttons until the printer turns itself off. (It took mine less than a minute.)
Now you can release the buttons and simply power it back on.
I got an error message about “improper shut down” since I unplugged it w/out powering down. After I clicked “OK” the printer was just fine and didn’t mind anymore. And now I can print.

Help!!!


90% of 'Ink System Failure' issue is caused by using non-hp inks...for you printer c5180,c6280 there is an assert that you can do.

1.Press and hold at the same time, 'Red Eye Removal' button and 'Print Photos'.
2.You will then see 'Enter special key combo'.
3.Press in sequence, Red Eye Removal' and 'Print Photos'.and then Red Eye Removal'
4.Using the right arrow button look for 'System Configuration' and then Press OK
5.Look for 'Hardware Failure Status' and then press Ok.
6.Follow the onscreen instructions and just press OK.
7.If you can see 'Hardware Failure Status Cleared, press cancel to continue...' Press Cancel as many times as necessary so that either 'Welcome to PHotosmart...or the same message.
8.Turn Off you unit Off and ON.
9.This should fix the issue because if not, you need to call HP to have your printer replaced if IN-WARRANTY

Ink System Failure


did a master reset. Unplug the printer, then pressing the help and ok buttons simultaneously plug it back in. it will recalibrate and ask to replace almost all of the ink cartridges, however Unplugging the printer, while then pressing the help and ok buttons simultaneously plug it back in did fix it and I am able to print again. Thank you soo soo soo much.

Press and Hold the “Print Photos” &”Red Eye Removal” buttons. Release both buttons. Display should say”Enter Special Key Combo”

Press and release the right arrow button until the display says “System Configuration Menu"

the printer will get ready as if it were starting perfectly for a first time, it will say something like: printer preparation occuring - do not interrupt

print a test page:
1) Load letter, A4, or legal unused plain, white paper into the input tray.
2) Make sure that the printer is on and loaded with unused plain, white paper.
3) Press Setup . The Setup menu appears.
4) Press the down arrow button to select Tools , and then press OK .
5) Press the down arrow button to select Self-test Report , and press OK . The self-test report prints.

if this doesn't work, i'd call hp support.
