If you have verified 2 separate legs of 110+v at the pump you will need to check the start and run capacitors..these give the motor a voltage boost to "jump start" your motor. The run capacitor is mounted under the large extra dome (cover) along the motor housing which can be removed by two screws.Remove this cover (power off!) and you will find a metal cylinder with 2 wires connected. This is the run capacitor and you will find it is probably rated 370v x 25-50 mF. If you have no means of checking this capacitor with a DVOM(meter) or capacitor checker device which measures microFareds then Replace this unit($10).This pump may or may not have a start capacitor ...if it does,it will be behind the rear cover(2 screws) and it will look alot like the run cap but a bit smaller and plastic. If you discover your motor to be split capacitance motor it will have both these capacitors in the described locations. Be sure to match the ratings of replacement capacitors before installing. good luck

Wiring a 230/115 1 hp 56y pool pump motor

please verify the name plate to be 115 230 volt motor.there will be a schematic that shows you exactly how to hook up this motor depending on the voltage being supplied to it. The main thing is switching between 115 and 230 volts this is a selector switch this very easily forgotten about. Please make sure to check that and double check that to make sure its on the proper selected switch. Good luck

double the amps, 230 runs cooler (my fav) . 1.5 is 9.6 amps at 230 volt. you will need to set the motor to run on on the lower voltage this is why you are having problems.. also the motor is thermally protected . this why it will run for awhile and shot off .. remember to prime the pump after any pump repair !!!! . jay the pool pump repair guy in longwood florida

Just replaced motor overheating and shutting off.

service factor must match old motor ! motor must match impeller hp rating ! .. get the numbers off the impeller and search it on the web.. bet your motor is too small.. the easy fix ? buy the right impeller for your motor.. the things you need when buying a impeller are as fallows.. your motors hp and SF .. thats the service factor ! if the voltage is 120 v the motor set on 240 it will jump back and forth between start and run.. it will make a click ..click ..click noise .USE A VOLT METER. I smell a northstar a real pain of a pump.. REMEMBER TO BUY AMERICAN PRODUCTS (PLEASE) AND SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL POOL PUMP REPAIR GUY.. I purchased a new 3/4hp Emerson pool pump installed it and the only thing it will do is hum.

OUT THE BACK SIDE OF THE MOTOR IS A SLOT IN THE SHAFT FOR A SCREWDRIVER , SEE IF YOU CAN TURN THE MOTOR OVER(BREAKER OFF !) YOU MAY HAVE BOUND THE IMPELLER OR IT COULD BE SET FOR 230 VOLTS AND YOU ARE RUNNING IT ON 115VOLT.....
IT MAY HAVE A BAD START CAP OR THE SWITCH MIGHT NEED CLEANING. THESE EMERSON MOTORS CAN BE HARD TO WORK ON DO TO THE HUGE AMOUNT OF PLASTIC PARTS

1.5 hp waterway champion pool pump issue

Be sure you have connected the motor to the line leads correctly and that the motor is set for the proper line voltage.

A somewhat common problem is that most motors are dual voltage (can be ran on 115 or 230 volt) and come factory set for 230 volts. If you connect it to a 115 volt circuit it will run for a while and then overheat and shut off.

You can go and buy a new motor, but that is about it...short of having the motor rewound, but I think you would find this to be a more costly option.
