Question about ViewSonic VG2021m LCD Monitor

2 Answers

Connections are all good but it has flickering lines in the background, mid screen. I have checked it in several different connections, laptop and work PC. when left for a period the screen goes blank and it can only be reactivated by pulling out the power supply and reconnecting. I'd hate to think that it is on the way out - it is only 3 years old.

The comments received are helpful but I'd like to explore other views - in particulr likely repair costs as it may be a better all around option to simply replace it.

thanks so much for this - it is probably worth fixing on this basis.

Hello,

The problem you are having is usually caused by a power supply going out. When the power supply starts failing it starts by not filtering the power like it should. This causes the controller board to act strange. If you look at my web site at: www.ccl-la.com/badcaps.htm We have pictures of the most likely cause of the power board problems. There are parts called capacitors that get damaged by the heat that get trapped in the monitor enclosure. After exposure to enough heat they pop the tops and cause power supplies to die. If you can handle a little soldering then you should be able to remove the back case and look over the power supply. Look for capacitors that look like the ones in the pictures on our site. You should be able to get replacement "caps" from Radio Shack or online and de-solder the bad caps and solder in the new ones. Re-assemble your monitor and you should be back running. If you have any questions about replacing the caps just email me.

Hello Grant190,

I'm afraid to say that indeed your having power problems. It does sound like a connection problem, but if you have already tried reconnecting ect then that rules out that problem.

From experience LCD's do not last more than a few year's before something goes wrong with them. Without actually being able to electronically test the inner components of your LCD the exact malfunction can not be determined.

Your two option's are basically having it repaired, they will diagnose the problem and let you know what it will cost to fix it. (You will likely need part of the power system replaced). It's likely this will be cheaper to have repaired then a new one would cost. That is something you will need to decide upon.

Post back if you have any further question's or comments. Id be happy to answer any question's you may have. Thank you for choosing Fixya!

Acer fell on floor flickering screen & lines across screen

It sounds like the screen broke when it fell. You'd need to get the screen repaired. Your best bet is to have someone else do it for you. Search for computer repair in your area. Sometimes places that repair broken cell phone screens can also repair laptop screens.

What causes flickering on 2/3rds of the screen on my SONY BRAVIA KDL-32L5000 MODEL?

If your LCD TV or monitor has stopped working, or is displaying one of the following symptoms, then it's a candidate for some new capacitors
- Flickering screen
- Screen image disappears after several seconds
- Dim screen
- Slow start
- Power LED on, but no picture
- Unusual colors and/or lines
The primary cause of LCD TV and monitor failure is caused by faulty capacitors. You can examine the capacitors in your LCD TV or monitor and actually see if they are bad.
If they appear bulged on top, then they need to be replaced.
New capacitors will solve a host of problems in LCD monitors and TV's and will extend the life of your monitor or TV by several years.
Check the cables, connectors and connections.
Take it to a repair shop.

Sounds like you have dislodged the monitor cable. It can be reseated by removing the screen bezel and the section above the keyboard, and ensuring that the connections are tight.

If it's still flickering after rechecking the connections, then you may have damaged the cable or connections.

rjmd1, Will unit do same when using standard vga input from a PC? You may need to "tear-down" unit to inspect the unit's switch-mode-power-supply and ccfl inverter circuits for bad (frosty looking) solder joint connections where the leads of the electronic components(active and passive) are soldered to the printed circuit boards and check the electrolytic filter capacitors for swollen tops of their aluminum can housings. If unit produced in 2005 might think about trade for new unit. It's not easy task to find "hair line" fractures of "intermittantly open" solder connections without use 10x jewlers loupe" or inspection microscope. Have you turned off or disabled all screen savers or power saving mode software? Let us know results of investigation. 12fixlouie

Display has gone bad with fine vertical pink lines

Connect an external monitor to your laptop, if you get a clear image on this monitor the the video card in the laptop is OK.

The fault could be a defective inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or a faulty CCFL lamp. Most likely a faulty CCFL lamp.

Defective CCFL backlight may has the following symptom:
  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) as reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

The laptop screen

This is going to be a hardware issue. Start by checking the screen connections, they sometimes work loose. If the connections are good and the problem persists, it's going to be the inverter or screen, and unfortunately, replacement is your only option.
