Could be a faulty battery.

they just use a NMH type battery similar to a cell phone, and they DO die occasionally, or if its been used a lot and not charged properly.
you can buy replacements from gaming stores, and from online auction sites. they go from US$10 to US$25 so shop around for a good price.

It could even be your PSP wall charger that isnt delivering enough juice to the battery?

I was using my psp while it was charging and the charging light turned off, so i naturally assumed that it was fully charged. But a few minutes later the battery died and it wont charge when i plug it in....

Have you tried to remove the battery and put it back in and try to turn it on. Try removing the battery and putting the charger in and starting the PSP. If it starts, it might be the battery. If it doesn't, it's either the plugin for the charger or the PSP is just dead. If it does start with the charger, try putting the battery back in, if it charges awesome. If it doesn't the battery might be dead.

The unit has a bad power part. I can highly recommend this guy. he has repaired my PSP twice with excellent results and low cost. You will need to ship it to him but he will pay shipping back to you.

It sounds like the electrical input isn't working. Try plugging the chargers into other wall jacks. It could be that your PSP is defective, which in that case you should exchange it at the store you bought it at. Since you bought it brand new, it should still be under warranty.

You might want to charge it because it might be dead or you can take out the battery and insert it back after 5 minutes.

PSP chager

Try a different outlet in the wall, it might be the outlet, if it isn't the outlet, maybe it's the power cord or the battery. If it's not that, then it's your PSP. You'll have to send it to sony for a new one if you want it replaced and if youve had it for over year you're going to have to pay $90. ------The fact that it turns off when the USB DC-in is connected and that it will not power up without the battery lead me to think that either the USB charging cable is just not supplying enough amps to run the psp standalone nor charge the battery very quickly, or something is odd in the PSP itself. I'm guessing when you plug something into the DC-in socket and it detects 5V then it switches to that as a source, if the USB cant supply the current it wants then it shuts down (just a guess).
