Question about Dell Dimension 4600 PC Desktop

2 Answers

Keyboard Error When I turn on my Dell Dimension I get a notice that there is a keyboard error, press F10 to continue. (it may be a different F key, I'm writing this from my office). No matter - there is no key on my keyboard that works. I turn my PC off and immediately re-start it; The screen shows "Keyboard error" but then boots normally and my keyboard operates fine. I discovered this method by accident - after repeatedly crawling under my desk and seeing that the keyboard was connected. Can you offer me any advice or assistance? George.

Sounds like intermittent keyboard failure. If it is the old style keyboard connector (small round jack), shut down, remove it completely, and then plug it back in. If it is a USB keyboard, you are probably having USB keyboard support problems. Try moving the keyboard to a different USB port - usually the ones closest to the parallel port or network jack that are sure to be on the motherboard itself.

Hope this helps...

  1. Make sure the keyboard is connected to the proper port on the back of the computer.
  2. Turn off the computer and disconnect thekeyboard and verify there are no bent, burnt or broken pins on the keyboard connector or on the keyboard connector on the back of the computer.
  3. Try a different keyboard on the computer.
  4. Unfortunately, if all of the above recommendations do not resolve your issue, the motherboard may have a bad controller and will need to be replaced.

When i boot up my pc i have to hit the f1 key. it says something about the keyboard

This happens when the BIOS does not recognize your USB keyboard.

To clear this error:

upon start up Enter BIOS Setup by pressing F2 or F12 (whichever BIOS software it is running). On the main BIOS window change the "Halt On.." value to "No Errors". Press F10(Save & Exit) then hit Enter key to restart.

Hope this helps.

Receive a drive one \error not found message

The keyboard has a feature (and associated button) called F-Lock. By default, when the computer boots, F-Lock is turned on. In the F-Lock mode, rather than sending the standard key commands for the function keys, the keyboard sends special alternate commands (like print for F7 and save for F8) that are configured in the iTouch program. In order to force the keyboard to send the standard function key commands, you must TURN OFF F-Lock by pressing the F-Lock button! Oh, and by the way, there are no indicator lights on the keyboard, and the F-Lock button is an always up momentary button - just like the keys on the keyboard, so there is no way to tell what state it is in, other than by pressing it and then pressing an F key to see what happens!
