Did you legally download this game? If not you most probably have to crack it. Not advisable to do so.

My horse calls for AA batteries - 4.

Since this game was made a while back there may be some compatibility issues with it running on Windows 7.
To fix this right click on the icon that was made when you installed the game. Click on Properties. Click on Compatibility. Check the box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" In the dropdown below, select Windows XP SP2. Click apply. Run the game.

The first thing to check is if you put in four AAA batteries. No, I'm not being condescending. When you open the battery lid on the underside of the horse, you will see slots for only two AAA batteries. This compartment actually comes out (pull the tab in the middle). Put in the four batteries, and put the compartment back in, ensuring that it's in the right way (the two contact pads need to be in the front). From there, you can push the horses head to have her walk (smooth surfaces only), pull the hind legs back or press her tail to winnie, etc.
