Question about GE Refrigerators

HotPoint fridge clicks and the fan doesn't turn

Hot Point fridge started clicking, (clicking from the power /mother board in back) and the fan isn't turning, it moves slightly with the clicking and moves freely when I spin by hand. Also, I tried getting water or ice and the clicking stops and the light near the water dispenser goes very dim.

The fan in the freezer is running.
I removed and measured the relay to the compressor and it reads approximately 14Vac, on/off with the clicking. I measured the resistance of the relay and found approximately 76 ohms across 2 pins.

I cleaned the coils about 2 months ago, it was working fine, I just cleaned it for preventative maintenance.

I left it clicking while I called around but received different answers from various appliance repair people.
One said it was the compressor another said it might be both (board and compressor)

After about an hour it started running!

Model # HSS25GFPJWW Serial # GH207672 No year of manufacturing.

Anything else I can do?
This fridge looks too good to be very old.

Thanks in advance.
Ken

    Thanks jumptrout
I thought there should be more than 14v.

    Are the new motherboards better?
How do I check the compressor?

    Thanks again

14 vac indicates a bad motherboard.Clicking could possibly be a bad start relay on the compressor.
Relays are inexpensive. I would replace the relay and hope for the best. Next step would be the motherboard that GE has had trouble with from day one

To check the compressor you need a volt meter set to read ohms. Remove the relay from the compressor, there are 3 pins on the compressor, common, start and run. Place a meter lead on one pin and a 2nd pin. Write down the reading. Advance to the next pin and record the reading. Then advance again and record the reading. You will be reading common to start. Common to run and finally start to run. Common to start and common to run should add up to the start to run reading. If so, the compressor should be good. Also, read from each compressor pin to the compressor dome. Scratch the paint away for a good contact. If any pin reads continuity to the compressor dome, the compressor is shorted.
The mother boards are about $185.00.

Hotpoint fridge clicks before starting

You have a possible compressor relay going bad or something like low house power could cause that. Also the mother board could be going bad without seeing any problem. Electronic boards sometimes go bad without being able to actually see it. The compressor part of the board will sometimes burn a spot on the mother board but can only be see on the back solder side.

My fridge gets really hot on top and between the fridge and freezer where the door meets

next time send the model number and brand name.usually when this happens is the condenser fan motor isn't working.pull the fridge out, remove the bottom back panel and check the fan to see if it's working,if it is check the condenser coil to see if it's filled with lint and dust,it could just need to be cleaned out but if it's that hot most likely the fan isn't running,if you get this tonight check it now,if the fan isn't running you could blow the compressor, the condenser fan blows and keeps the compressor cool enough so it doesn't overheat by moving the hot air and the heat also esscapes through the condenser coil so if that's clogged with dust the machine will run hotter than normal,if the fan isn't running you can stick any window fan back there and blow it onto the compressor to keep it cool until you fix the condenser fan motor, this way you won't loose any food and if the compressor goes it's new fridge time,to much to repair.hope this helps and good luck with your machine.one more thing,i've found the fans not running and by pushing the blade it runs again,if this happens the fan could run and never have a problem or it could stop an hour later but i would change it out no matter what.if it's a G.E. fridge and the motor isn't running, most likely it will be the computer board,i've found 10 machines doing this and the temp. settings turning on and off or the evap fan motor in the freezer runs slow and then fast and the condenser fan isn't running or running slowly, this is why you have to send the brand name and model number.

Hello, My fridge side of my hotpoint model # Hsm25gftc sided by side fridge/freezer isn't getting cold anymore. I purchased it in 2007 I believe. I've tore the ice maker and tray out and pulled...

if the freezer is working fine it sounds like you could have a bad damper control, also there's another thing i want you to check first, hotpoint is a g.e. product, they have sensors in the machines, you said you had the back wall off, take it off again and on top of the evap coil you'll see a sensor,it looks like a white bullet with two whits wires going to it,look at it and if where the wires connect to it it has a black ring around it you have to change it out, also ther's one of these sensors in the fidge section too,it senses how cold the fridge is and tells the damper door to open and close,it sounds like your damper is staying shut, the part number for the temp. sensors are WR55X10025 and it's like 8 dollars,if they have the black ring on them they most likely are your problem, the new sensors are all white,if you have the white sensors then you could have a bad damper.go to this site,it's sears site http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Hotpoint-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-HSM25GFTCSA/1811/0165000/H0712760/00006?blt=06&prst=&shdMod= go to the fresh food diagram and look at the damper and the sensor, one of these parts are badmalso g.e. has had alot of problems with the mother boards, the computer board in the back of the fridge,if the condenser fan and evap fans are running fine and the freezer is fine then i would replace the damper and the sensor but change out the sensor first because it's 8 bucks,if that doesn't do it then buy the damper, all it does is the fan blows cold air from the freezer to the fridge section,if the damper isn't opening the air can't enter into the fridge section.hope this helps and points you in the right derection, let me know how you make out, good luck salde

Your fridge operates like that: a compressor liquefies freon vapours; this creates heat so the hot liquid goes thru a cooling radiator with a fan on it (these 2 elements are at the rear bottom of the fridge) the freon fluid goes to an evaporator, turns to vapour and absorbs heat in the process, cooling the evaporator; a fan blows air over the evaporator and spreads the cooled air all over the fridge; the vapours return to the compressor.
In the rear of the fridge you should make sure that the radiator is clean and the fan working; inside the fridge you should make sure that the evaporator is not covered in ice and/or dirt and its fan is working. If necessary clean both.
If they are clean , the fans work but the evaporator isn't cold then either the freon circuit has sprung a leak and all the fluid has been lost or the compressor isn't working - to find out which just put your hands on the compressor : if it's hot and vibrates the fluid has been lost, if it doesn't vibrates then the compressor isn't working.
The compressor isn't working because either the thermostat or itself have failed. To find out which the compressor will have to be powered directly from the mains: if it starts then the thermostat must be replaced, if it doesn't the compressor will.
To fix the freon circuit or to replace the compressor a certified professional is mandatory, you must call one.

1. is light on in side when you open the door. If not check breakers or fuses.
2. Can you hear the compressor running. If not do you hear any clicking sounds.
3. If you hear clicking sounds, try putting a fan on compressor and unplug refrigerator.
4. Wait one hour.
5. plug back in. If compressor starts let it run and see if it cools, if it doesnt, call service man.
6. If it goes back to clicking, call a service man.
try this

The ice dispenser and water dispenser on the door will not work

"Prepare for the worst" This is a problem i'm currently dealing with at the moment, ice maker thaw'd and refroze the ice as a block, binding the crusher turbine till it quit working. then water dispenser started spitting till it quit working, but anyway i disconnected the ice maker and water dispenser power hookup, because when i tried to use it it was drawing off the power of the fridge. now i'm to the point where fridge clicks like the relay is going out. in the back of the freezer below the ice maker tray i removed the clip or screw to where when it clicks i can hand spin the cooling fan on the click, and fridge starts up and runs, but don't remove this panel because having it on helps the air push into fridge compartment and keeps cooling elements from turning to a block of ice, " so long story short " its either your cooling fan or relay on chip board that starts cooling fan, i'm no expert but this is where i'm at hope it helps.

Clicking sounds (not immediately preceeded by a power loss) indicate a bad relay on the mother board. Replace the mother board, WR55X10942)

Relay clicking, not cooling either side

First of all Give me model# and Serial#.
you will most likely have to replace main control board and evaporator fan motor. They have had a service bulletin out on this problem.
