The camera uses a slightly different format than a computer. You can go from camera to computer but not the other way.

WHY CAN'T I connect to a AMD laptop and download my pix. I PUT 9PIN/USB cable on my download cable so it can be connected..to the laptop..

What make and model camera?

If it uses a memory card of some type, consider not connecting your camera to your computer. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).

You can recover all your pictures from memory card with third party data recovery software.I have succeed to recover pictures from SD card with Tenorshare data recovery. It can recover data after deeply scanning your memory card to look for lost data. By the way,you can download it and scan your memory card for free to preview whether your lost pictures can be recovered. http://www.any-data-recovery.com

How do we get images that are on the camera memory not the sd card off the camera. We tried via nikon transfer to the computer and the computer doesn't see them, but it says there are 196 pix

To copy pictures to/from the internal memory, select Copy from the Setup menu. If you want to transfer them to a computer, remove the memory card before making the connection.

Internal memory help

You know how you can tell? Turn the camera on without the XD card inserted. Try to take a picture. It will either take the picture or it will tell you to put the card in. If it takes the picture without the card, play it back. Easy, and thanks for coming to FixYa.

Nikon coolpix L18. Can't put pix on comp. format card

I suggest you to remove the card from the camera and use a memory card reader to transfer the pictures to the computer. Note that the memory card should be formatted in the camera. Once the pictures are transferred you can reinsert the memory card to the camera and then format it in the camera.

Back up all the pictures on the card and then format the card.. Everything will be back to normal.
Note: While formatting select FAT32 file system as it is more reliable..
