Question about Microwave Ovens

Open Question

I have a Bosch SHY66C02UC/23 dishwasher. The on-off button failed (broke in two pieces). I have obtained a Bosch replacement on-off button and need to install it. My question is: Can I simply remove the top 4 screws which attach to the "top cover" of the door from inside, and slide the top piece up, and put the button in place, and reattach the top cover of the door, or must I remove the entire inside metal panel to get to the switch? It really looks like the top piece of the door should slide loose with the 4 top screws removed. Thank you, Max Mintz Philadelphia

SOURCE: Lightbulb in Emerson microwave model MW8115 SS

Hello,

You have 3 choices to use on removing the safety screw(s) on the MW (microwave or nuker as I call them) cover.

1 - The screw(s) is/are usually a modified TORX T-20 or T-25 bit adapter. Sometimes you can very carefully use a standard T-20/25 bit adapter to get the screw loosened. Sometimes! If that doesn't work then you have option #2.

2 - If #1 doesn't work you can use a small flat blade screwdriver that has been modified with a slot cut into the center of the blade end to bypass the center pin. First find a narrow enough flat blade srewdriver that you don't care about anymore, and make sure it fits rather snugly inside the screw-head just for a loose fit. If the blade is a bit wider - no problem - it can be ground down to fit snugly. Next - using a dremel tool and diamond cutting wheel attachment (or similar) cut a slot into the end of the blade. Make sure that the screwdriver is going to bite the insides of that screw-head first though before wasting a perfectly good screwdriver. You will have to adjust by trial and error until you get the blade to fit perfectly the head of the safety screw. If the screws are really tight use a pair of vice grips to clamp the screwdriver blade for extra leverage.

If neither of these methods work for you or you can't modify a special tool then you will have to do the last option.

3 - Using an easy out of proper size drill out the center pin and then use the proper "easy out" to back out the screw. Discard that/those screw(s) and replace with regular phillips head screws after replacing the light bulb.

Hopefully you will be able to do this repair yourself? Otherwise if your neighbor is Tim the Toolman Taylor I'm sure he'll be able to give you the necessary hand to do it for you.

Hope this helps fix your dilema you are in.

One note here -

Make sure you unplug the nuker first and be VERY CAREFUL as to NOT TOUCH the HIGH VOLTAGE CAPACITOR inside. Otherwise you risk a chance of SEVERE HIGH VOLTAGE SHOCK!!!!!!!!!

BE VERY CAREFUL....

Best regards,

Frank

No, that is the "waveguide cover".

It provides very important protection for the magnetron.

And always keep it clean according to your manual's instructions.

SOURCE: Door Handle

If at all possible try getting an exploded image break down to see what needs to happen, basically you have two things in your way one is the "choke"...the large black rectangle on the inside of the door this has to be pryed off carefully all the way around and lifted off, pocket knife works great to get it started. next you will have the front door assembly snapped onto the mesh screen and frame of the door itself. Once you have seperated the front door you will see the screws for the handle, DONT OVERTIGHTEN these screws when you reinstall.

There are no spares listed for the power button. You may want to see if it came loose as opposed to broke. That means take it apart. However, that unit is not made anymore.

With all due respect, what are you doing to it?
If you use it with nothing in the cavity, that will kill the magnetron otherwise it will last for years and years.
Very unusual and Bosch is a well respected name.
If there is a probem with the oven, Bosch will replace it so take it up with Bosch.

Replacement of the turntable motor should be carried out by a qualified appliance repair service.

YOUR SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT!

Attempt this only if you are competent.

But here is a basic method if you are mechanically minded and have electrical safety knowledge.

I am assuming the plastic coupler is not split or broken and causing the problem.

The motor assembly is fixed to the base of the oven usually with two screws and access is obtained usually by removing the inspection plate directly beneath the motor. It is usually a plug in synchronous motor that revolves at a few revs per minute but the plastic cogs in the motors gear box fail and the motor assembly must be replaced. They are fairly inexpensive and obtainable usually from a domestic appliance repair shop.
If you feel confident, disconnect it from the mains power, remove anything in the cavity and turn it upside down if it is a tabletop model, a little more complicated if it is built in!
Remove the inspection plate, sometimes it must be cut out with sharp cutters, and disconnect the motor. Remove the motor and go and get a new one. Fit the new motor and fit the inspection cover back on the base by turning it to fit and using an extra screw fix it then put the microwave back in its position. Plug it back in, with the turntable and plate. Put a cup of water on the plate inside of the oven and heat for 20 seconds to check the plate goes round.
Hope this helps.

The same thing happened to my microwave this morning while heating a cup of water, which broke into 3 pieces too before the water hadnt even hot.
Maybe you have already solved your problem and I just share my experience.
I am trying to call the manufacturer nearby and ask for the turntable, but I am afraid the new turntable dosent fit my a little bit old microwave.
