Hi, Does the drive require a sound cable from the drive to either the sound card or the sound connection on the motherboard?

It will generally be a thin 4 wire flat plug, if you require one.

I had a Sony drive fail and replaced it with the LG Writer/Reader new drive . The PC does not reconize the LG and I have a Sony reader also and now it does not reconize it either. I just boutht the LG. I...

If the CD drives are parallel type (with a wide data cable connecting them to the motherboard), one must be set as the master and the other as the slave device. This is done with jumpers found near the cable connector. This is what just about every drive looks like from the back:

The jumpers you're looking for are number 3. The drive connected to the end of the data cable should be set as the master (MA position). The slave drive (SL position) connects to the plug near the middle of the cable.

Some systems use a cable that requires setting the drives for cable select (CS). Check the Sony drive you removed and the one still in the system. If they are set for CS, set the new drive that way as well. Then they should be correctly identified and accessible.

Trying to write movies to a dvd re-writer but says transfar done but nothing is written on dvd

> nothing is written on DVD

The "laser" that should be "burning" the DVD-media has failed.

Spend $40 to purchase a new CD/DVD reader/writer, and install it.

New dvd writer recognised as old

Go to Control Panel.

Locate System.

Locate your Device Manager.

Under your DVD/CD Rom devices, locate the old DVD writer. Select it. Right click and hit Uninstall.

Now scan your computer for new hardware, and install the new DVD writer with the discs it comes with, if any.

New hp dvd writer... no sound from dvd's

First double click on speaker image in right corner of your screen to see if you have MUTE disabled for all the devices and you have audio drivers to have speaker activated. Second, if you recently istalled new dvd driver it can be hardware problem. There are audio plugs (analog and digital) on back of DVD-Burner. Check if they are connected properly. Third your DVD-playback software might not supporting audio, so you might be missing audio codecs to playback DVD-audio. It depends which program you using. Maybe you need to download another program to playback DVD, for instance Windows Media Player 11.
Good Luck

LG GSA-4167B DVD Writer... PC restarts whenever any CD is inserted

What is happening is that the dvdrom firmware or the laser is failing and cannot read the disc; and because the pc is using all the system resources trying to do so; it appears that you cannot get anything to run, making it seem as if the hard drive is faulty also, though not the case. You will need to replace the drive if this is a common occurance, as the life of a dvd drive nowadays dependant on use is aprox 2 years, because as the prices come down so does the quality of the laser required to burn and read discs.
