Maybe your USB cable is damaged. Try to use WiFi connection, download the app (PS PC suite WiFi explorer) in Google play then connect your laptop and HTC phone to the same WiFi router or use tethering from your mobile phone. You can transfer the pictures from your HTC Hero to your laptop using a USB cable.
First, make sure that you're phone is turn on. Connect the usb cable to the computer and to your HTC. Once you connected the phone & the computer, there will be a USB Connected option that will appear in your phone. Choose "mount." Open my computer and a new USB drive will appear. Open it and look for "DCIM" folder. Open that folder and open the folder named "100Media," that contains all the pictures from your camera.
