If its a gm car it has to relearn idle you may have to clear flood start by pushing gas pedal all the way down and hold till it starts then keep it running with pedal until it learns how to idle.

if the engine is a briggs and Stratton then check the valve clearance as B&S engines have a history of the valve stems stretching early in use and when hot hold the valve partially open until cooled down

Sounds like you have some injector problems or the fuel pressure regulator. If the check engine light is not on, I would look for something allowing extra fuel into the engine.

its sounds like your IAC (idle air control) motor isn't working correctly. It controls the amount of air that enters the engine when the throttle body is closed. If it is not working, the engine will start but dies from insufficiant air flow. Your car doesn't die with the gas pedal pressed because pressing the pedal opens the throttle body allowing air to enter the engine.
