If there is a cable on the end of the lever , replace the cable assembly
if the lever is direct connection, spray with an anti rust penetrant on a regular basis for a few days then try to move it
try using localized heat from a butane torch to break the rust / corrosion seal while trying to move it

Testimonial: "Ok, thanks Bill, i will take the cover off and see how it goes."

Also, there is a lot of white smoke when the engine is revved, could this be because of some old oil that is still in there?

  • Bill Boyd Jan 10, 2017

blue smoke is oil, white smoke is water in the oil or fuel

Ok, will it be safe to run it through until it runs out?

  • Bill Boyd Jan 10, 2017

Impossible to say as the water could be from a corrosion hole
3 years is a long time for a unit that operated in the water environment but was left high and dry

2013 Honda Rubicon TRX500FA, Starting in Gear / Neutral Positions

When starting in gear there is a switch , controlled by the front brake lever to avoid over revving, make sure the front brake lever is fully applied when starting in gear , if the engine starts to run rough disengage the brake lever fully, if rough running continues then likely switch needs replacing/servicing

Sounds like the transmission is gone .Check the fluid level ,and sometimes the filters inside the transmission gets clogged up.have it checked by a qualified transmission mechanic.

1991 Ford F150 won't shift into park or reverse. Will go into neutral and drive, and the linkage at the transmission moves ok

The linkage may be out of adjustment preventing the shifter from moving into reverse or park.
One way to test this is to disconnect the linkage and manually move the lever on the transmision making sure that it can be set into park. Also try moving the lever counting each click from park to low gear to make sure it is clicking into each gear. If this works then the linkage is probably out of adjustment.
On the link cable there is typically a bolt in an oval shaped metal near the transmission shift lever.
1)Detach the shift cable from the transmission shift lever
2)Put the transmision shift lever in the park position, and also the shifter in the cab
3)Loosen the adjustment bolt
4)Reattach the cable to the lever
5)Tighten the adjustment bolt in place
6)Confirm that you can shift through all of the gears
Hope this helps

1971 ford f100 pickup neutral safety switch wiring color code

Ford Neutral Safety Switch; Ford Reverse Light Switch; Backup Light Switch.

The Neutral Safety Switch wires in my 1971 Ford F100 are orange with a blue stripe.
The Reverse, or Backup Light Switch wires are black with a red stripe.

There are two sets of two wires across this combined neutral safety and backup light switch, for a total of 4 wires. Photos are at the end of this post.

The switch for the 1971 Ford F100 pickup truck is the same as in many other years and models. For details, including parts numbers, see the following quote from an expert at Ford Truck Enthusiasts:
http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/287185-back-up-light-and-neutral-safety-switch-2.html#post5601846

The neutral switch also controls the backup lights, and is the same 1967/77.

C7TZ-7A247-A .. Neutral/Backup Switch (Motorcraft SW-600)

There is no separate backup light switch..except on 1967/68 F350's.

Neutral switch location 1967/77:

The plastic half moon shaped neutral safety switch mounts on the outside lower portion of the steering column (NOT on the transmission!).

It's activated by an inverted Y shaped lever that snaps on the shift tube

D0TZ-7B097-B .. Lever, Neutral Switch Actuator = From FTE sponsor DIRECT FORD PARTS: Ford suggested retail price: $18.72 / FTE member net: $13.23.

The switch is also still available from Ford, but the website is down so I can't post the list & net prices. .

1978 is the FIRST year the F100/350's have the neutral switch mounted on the transmission. __________________

The neutral switch is installed on the steering column near the firewall, with 5/8" bolts into the steering column (visible hole) and down column from a rectangular opening in the column housing. The actuating lever for the switch is attached to the gear shift shaft inside the housing; the lever is visibly protruding from the opening in this image.

3.3 voyager, would not go into reverse went forward a ok, now will go into reverse but wont go forward

With a partner and engine off but key in on (not start) position: Have them shift from Park to Low one gear at a time, while you watch the shift linkage located on top of the transmission. Sounds like the shift cable is loose. IF SO: Place Shift Lever in Park. Loosen the the cable adjustment screw. Move the shift rod (going into the transmission) towards the front of the vehicle until in Park. Tighten the cable adjustment screw to 100 in-lbs. Check Park/Neutral starting only.

Transmission is stuck in reverse but the shifter is in neutral and will not go in gear

Check for wear in the gear lever selector/gate mechanism.
It may have allowed the lever to select reverse, the 'jump' the lockout gate back to neutral position for selection of forward gears.
You may be able to de-select reverse if you access the lever directly at the gearbox case.
