Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

GE microwave will not come on. No light no control panel.

I have check the fuse and tested the volts all the way to the smartboard it is getting 120 volts just won't light up. I am guessing I need a new smartboard. Any other ideas? This happened during a power surge but the fuse was not blown. I don't understand why the door light is not coming on is it running through the smartboard?

The door light is usually controlled by a relay on the control board, not just the door switch.

We regularly repair such control units for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week or so with a one-year guarantee.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number from the tag on the unit) for more information & help.

JVM 1440 GE microwave stopped heating. all other functions work great. where do I start

GE microwaves are notorious for the magnetron failing, this is what generates the microwaves. Usually the unit will make a louder than normal deep hum when running if this is the case, but not always. If you have the schematic, you can measure for 120 volts leaving the control board to the transformer, you can simply measure the line in on the transformer for this. You also want to visually note that all other functions like the countdown timer, inter light, turntable, and fan are all running when you start a cooking cycle. The monitor, and interlock switches mounted on the latch assy need to be checked for continuity too. If replacing the magnetron we always recommend replacing the high volt diode connected to the capacitor and chassis ground. Pleazer Appliance...

The main fuse in the microwave has blown, this is often caused by a defective door switch.

GE JVM1190SY/WY My microwave shows no signs of receiving any power. The light won't even come on. I have tried plugging it in to several different outlets, all of which tested good for a 120 volts. ...

Dead appliance, power on wall outlet.

YOUR SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT!

Attempt this only if you are competent.

If your appliance has absolutely no functions at all, remove it from the mains supply, remove the case and see where the mains lead goes in to the appliance and follow the cable until you find the main fuse.
ONLY USE THE SAME TYPE AND RATING OF FUSE TO REPLACE IT.
The usual cause of this fuse failure is the door switches are contaminated or sticking. Check the door switches before putting power back on to the appliance.
Hope this helps.

How do i change the bulbs on a jvm1870sk03 microwave

That's covered on pages 35 & 36 of the owner's manual here.

Cooktop Light/Night Light

On models JVM1850, JNM1851, DVM1850 and
EMO4000, replace the burned-out bulb with a 120 volt,
40-watt incandescent bulb (WB36X10003), available
from your GE supplier.

On models JVM1870, JVM1871, JVM2050 and
JVM3670, replace the burned-out bulb with a 120 volt,
20-watt halogen bulb (WB36X10213), available from
your GE supplier.

To replace the bulb(s), first disconnect the
power at the main fuse or circuit breaker panel
or pull the plug. *

Remove the screw at the left edge of the light
cover and push on the right edge of the cover
to open.

Be sure the bulb(s) to be replaced are cool
before removing. After breaking the adhesive
seal, remove the bulb by either gently turning
(for models JVM1850, JNM1851, DVM1850 and
EMO4000) or pulling straight out (for models
JVM1870, JVM1871, JVM2050 and JVM3670).

Replace with the same size and type bulb.

Raise the light shield and replace the screw.
Connect electrical power to the oven.

Oven Light

Replace the burned-out bulb with a 120 volt, 20-watt
halogen bulb (WB36X10213), available from your
GE supplier.

To replace the oven light, first disconnect the
power at the main fuse or circuit breaker panel
or pull the plug.

Remove the top grille by taking out the screws
on top of the grille that hold it in place and
sliding the grille to the left (opening the door
makes grille removal easier).

Next, remove the light cover.

On some models, the light cover is located
in the center of the top opening. Remove the
screw that secures the light cover and lift the
cover off.

On some models, the light cover is located at the
left of the top opening. Lift the cover off.

Pinch the clips that hold the light socket in
place and lift the socket out.

Remove the bulb from the light socket by
pulling straight out. Replace with the same size
and type bulb, then replace the light socket and
cover.

Replace the grille and screws. Connect electrical
power to the oven.

Display out on GE spacemaker JVM140 microwave

There should be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, & testing.

dee77f7.jpg

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You will have a fuse, plus one or more thermal cutouts or thermostats, any of which can interrupt power to the unit.

Accessing some components for testing and possible replacement will require you to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

Depending on your full model number (you listed part of it) the small low voltage transformer is located either on the control circuit board, on a bracket attached to it, or on the chassis / floor of the microwave with wires running back to the board.

If it's a separate type, the mini manual will show you how to check the continuity of the windings. But generally the primary (110V side) will be the one to fail, and it should read somewhere between 100-300 ohms.
You can find links to helpful exploded view diagrams and part ordering help here.

I recommend that you bookmark that link to your favorites.Feel free to contact me directly (and please include your full model number from the tag in or on the unit) for a free estimate and free tips & do-it-yourself advice.

No power

  • Check the circuit breaker and make sure you have 120v at the outlet, Hoss.
  • Fuse blown in the control panel. Sounds easy and it is if you know how to take the thing apart without getting your gluteus flabbeous shocked off by the capacitor in there that holds 2,000 volts (yes, even with it unplugged). Have fun, Homer.
  • Control board fried. Test for power going to board. If exists, problem lies on board somewhere. On the GE/Hotpoints using the "smartboard," it is sometimes possible to locate a bad soldering connection on the board that can be repaired, restoring function to the board. Otherwise the entire board must be replaced.

Yes, the fuse is bad. Be sure to use a ceramic fuse of the same current (Amps) rating.

They're available at appliance parts stores, hardware stores, Lowe's, Wal-Mart, etc.

We regularly repair these GE / Samsung boards from customers nationwide with just such problems for $32.50. If it's too bad off, we can get this board (# WB27X10466 remanufactured) for $145. A new board runs about $180. We would need the full model number with suffix.
