Question about Washing Machines

2 Answers

I have a A O Smith 40 gal.auto storage gas water heater Model GVR 40 100, built Aug. 2007. Pilot went out by itself and now will not reignite?has a piezo ignitor. Air intake screen clean w/o any air flow obstruction, thermostat control knob functions appropriately and wires leading from same are fine, there is gas supply to other appliances and I've tried the relighting procedure many times with no success, and no spark evident thru viewport. Also, the temperature in my garage has been around 95-100° for the past week, but my temp setting is at B setting, or 140°F. Is it a faulty thermocouple/TCO, piezo ignitor or something else? Should I pull out the burner unit? I will need directions/schematic if I replace anything. What else should I consider? Thanks a million. William in Los Gatos CA

I have a Reliance water heater - 40 gal Model

In my first 15 years as a plumber I never saw a pilot light issue on a gas WH that a new thermocouple didn't fix. Since the government mandated a redesign of the fire box, I've seen three that nothing ever fixed - two Whirlpools and one (my usually ultrareliable) AO Smith - including replacing the entire burner assembly and the regulator. And I've heard of many others.

Check the thermocouple connection for tight. (Don't strip.. threaded soft metals.)
Check the microvents on the bottom ? of the burn box for dust, even if it is new.
Call Reliant and demand new units until you get one that works.
Try another model. Consider a 52gal electric.

I've always recommended gas over electric, and AO Smith and Rheem were my recommendations (and "Reliants" were "lumber yard" water heaters. Sorry.)

Since the mandated redesigns, I don't really have a "proven reliable" model to suggest. I increasingly believe the restricted air flow design is the ultimate culprit, including any changes to the thermocouple/regulator construct to accommodate the restricted air flow design. Just my hunch.

My plumber refers to the gas hot water heater that he wants to install as a "Standard" water heater. Do you think he means "American Standard"? Mac

Gvr 40 100 will not stay lite

The Cold air screen on the bottom of the water heater is partially plugged. That is if the pilot light can be lit and stay on, but goes out when the heater should be functioning normally. This is not the removable plastic screen but a round white-yellow grid with 1/32" holes. You can try to clean it through the bottom but you may have to remove the gas line from the controller to the burner, pilot gas line, and thermocouple connection to remove that complete assembly to get access to the screen. The AO Smith booklet warns of this but they pretend the plastic screen will keep this second screen clean but it won't. After three years it was two thirds plugged.

Gas pilot wont stay on i think i need thermocouple dont know wha size to get or should i just get pilot assembly gvr-40 100 series

they are universal, the only thing youi need to know is how long it should be, most will take a 30inch, just to make sure you have enough, our oyu can take the one out that you have and match it up, the one you take out will actually measure a little shorter then the new one which is ok, just make sure you put the burner assembly back in the perch correctly, if not you will have bigger problems then you want to have
