No audio from external speakers

After windows automatic updates on 7/21/09, on my Dell D430 laptop running on XP pro, the external speakers on my laptop no longer work...the earphones still have all of the sounds / audio that I would expect.

However the external speakers that are connected via a docking station no longer produce audio. They worked fine yesterday.

Perhaps the win update I ran this morning did something to create a conflict with the docking station?

To find out if it's the windows update that did it, you could to a system restore. Press the start menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore. Then you choose Restore computer to an earlier time. This will give you a small calendar, which have some numbers in bold font. Choose the latest restore point.

Reboot the laptop, the Software should ID the Hardware and apply the generic driver, Or, Open Control Panel, Device Manager, San for Hardware Changes, the Scan should ID and apply the driver, reboot. OR, you can find the Dell Latitude D610 Windows XP drivers here: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/latitude-d610. Run Windows Updates and Dell Updates for current and up-to-date drivers.

I have dell vostro 200 slim tower. win xp pro sp3... originally this computer had vista installed but there was no restore cd so when it crashed my friend gave it to me. i used my xp cd and everything...

Have you tried some external powered speakers or even some headphones?
The problem may just be a dead speaker in your case or even a loose or misplaced jumper wire from the speaker to the motherboard.
Good luck, hope this helps. Post back if you're still stuck.

How do i restore my Dell Latitude D430 laptop

YOU WILL NEED TO INSTALL WINDOWS FIRST OR USE IT IN AN EXISTING INSTALL. This CD DVD contains every driver you need for your Dell Latitude D430 XP Laptop.
You are buying an automatic system that installs every driver onto your system with minimal user knowledge and interaction.
This recovery disk includes much of the original factory software and utilities.

Depending on the age of your system, we have also included our own emergency driver re-detect software. This will remove and unplug all devices from your system and re-detected every driver automatically removing old and duplicates. This will in effect clean out the side of your registry that deals with hardware. No other restore disk has this software and can claim to clear your system hardware drivers.

Some of our restore disks have an automatic system driver update included!
There are many applications that allow you to automatically update your drivers. These applications scan your system and the automatically download and update your drivers.
We are rolling this feature out in all our recovery cds over the next few months

The laptop screen is almost blank/black. an external monitor is working ok. when i close the lid of the laptop and open it again the screen comes on for a sec but then goes off again almost blank/black....

As per Dell Technical support LCD kit needs to be Replaced.

I Would recommend to
Run PSA Diagnostics. Check for PSA Error codes

if unable see display during PSA Diagnostics use External monitor to make note of Error code.

Check Error code on support.dell.com

If no Error codes. Then Only option is replace LCD kit

I have a dell d430 but sound decided to stop working

Be sure your speakers / headphones are plugged into the correct port. There are several, try each one.

If you still fail to recieve sound from your system, check to make sure the speakers / headphones are functioning properly. If all else fails, you can usually find a cheap surroundsound PCI card for anywhere between $14 - $30 at your local computer componant outlet.

Bestbuy, Fry's are just a couple, there are also online avenues you can persue, such as Newegg.com ,and tigerdirect.com... Bestbuy has technicians on staff that will be more than willing to help you chooose a card, as well, they may be able to help you install it.

How do I enable the inbuilt webcam on my DELL D430 laptop?

Hi scottie_dorn,
this isn't a webcam, it's an ambient light sensor, I'm afraid. Just to make sure: assuming that you're running a Windows-system, please open the device manager and have a look at "Audio, Video..." whether there is an entry regarding a webcam. I'm pretty sure, there isn't one... Greetings from Germany,
