Question about Dell Latitude C610 Notebook

Dell Latitude C610 doesn't recognize hard drive

Hi, I have Dell Latitude C610 laptop. When I try to boot up it won't find the hard drive. I checked to make sure the hard drive is inserted properly, but Bios won't recognize it - it's just showing it's not there. I've changed it out to a new one and it's still showing there's no hard drive. I've run the diagnostics and gone into the setup utility and can't figure it out.

Please help!

Yes, the laptop was working fine before. And you are probably going to think I'm dumb (LOL) but I'm not too sure what clip you are talking about.

It was attached to the old hard drive. I took it off the old hard drive and screwed it on the new one, correct. And put it into the computer and it still didn't work.

  • jobrikailuc Jul 21, 2009

Well it must be another bad hard drive then since the new one doesn't work either. :( I guess I will have to send it back and try again. Thanks for your help though glaron!

It's not even letting me into BIOS because it's telling me there's no hard drive again. It's the exact same problem as before.

Myabe I'm not clarifying myself enough. When my computer boots up, it won't even go into Windows because it tells me

"Primary hard disk drive 0 not found

No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility"

So I hit F1, it tells me the same thing. When I hit F2, it brings me to a screen where it says "Dell Latitude C610 Setup Screen" and "BIOS Version A16" and then has 7 pages of system info. (But I don't think this is the BIOS screen - or is it?)

Either way - it doesn't matter which hard drive I have installed in the computer. It' telling me that there is no hard drive installed.

It was $50. They said I could send it back if I had problems with it so that's what I'm gonna do. ;)

  • check the clip that presses onto the hard drive pins, this is the cheapest part and was the laptop working good before ,

When you took out the old hard drive
there is a black hard drive connector
this would have holes to push on to the new hard drive
without this, it will not plug into the motherboard
be careful if one of the pins breaks the hard drive wont work

I have an oldDell Latitude C610, when I try to start it it trys to start but then it beeps once and then nothing yet the hard drive is still making a noise

Hi. You might need to run diagnostics on the hard drive by restarting your computer then press F12 on the Dell logo and select "Boot to Utility Partition".

I'm suspecting that you have a busted hard drive and if it is, then just replace the hdd.

Dell Latitude C510/c610 Can this notebook book from the USB Port? I want to install Fedora Linux on my newly repartitioned HD but I can't read the DVD (don't have DVD drive available).

When you want to boot to the USB hard drive just have the drive installed, reboot the system, select the appropriate function key to go to boot options (should tell you what to press in the beginning of boot up) and select USB hard disk.

An important thing to note: Most Linux distributions won't boot from a USB hard drive or thumb drive without a special program for unpacking it to the USB Hard disk. Check with the distribution website for special instructions.

Good Luck,

External hard drive

Yes, no problems, if the USB hard drive draws too much power you will need to attach an external power supply, usually the small laptop 21/2" drivers don't need external power supplies.

New hard drive latitude c610

The make does not matter - in fact Dell does not make their own hard drives.

Just be sure you get the right type, most have IDE type connectors with pins but some of the newer models are using SATA drives. Yours is an older model so it should take IDE.

Dell latitude c610 primary or administraitor password unlock

I believe I can help you. Is this a Windows password after it boots up, or is this a bios power on password before it boots? The bios password on a Dell is generally on a white screen when it's first powered. Get back to me, and I'll get you thought this.

The machine should recognize that there is a hard drive there, if it doesn't then the hard drive has crashed or failed. You will have to replace it.
