Question about Samsung HL-P5063W 50" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

The Samsung HL-P5063W lamp went out, leds showing. At about the same time we heard a buzzing sound we hadn't heard before. deep and variable. Question is: is it just a coincidence that both happened at same time? And, if the fan needs replacement is it something we can do ourselves?

Well There are some clarifications I need.

    1. It seems to me that the lamp did go eg the 3 leds lit up (and I have a new one coming tomorrow)

    2. Would there be a causal reason that the fan and the light failed simultaneously? Seems unlikely.

    3. The idea that the deep rasping sound is the power supply intrigues me since the connection seems causal -could a power supply "failure" or outage cause the lamp failure? In which case the lamp may still be ok? If I put in a new light without first curing the vibrations (supposedly from the ps) could the new lamp be damaged unwittingly?

    4. Would a failed power supply make the continued sound of vibrations any time I turn the set on?

    5. Can we some way quickly test whether the power supply is failed or failing?

    6. I would like to know with certainty if the noise is coming from the fan or the power supply

    Thanks

I am uncertain if the cause of the lamp failure has something to do with either the power supply or the fan. The simultaneous failures seems less likely if it is the fan ie no causality. And there is still this low vibration if I turn the unit on. Fan problem? Power supply? How do I tell?

How can I test to see if there is a power supply failure? and if there is, wouldn't it be unwise to put in a new lamp unit as it could be harmed by the damaged PS esp if you believe that the PS caused the first failure..

I would like to solve this issue before getting an estimate or putting the new lamp in.

How do I tell? Power supply or Fan failure - or neither?

Although there is no certainty as to which unit failed and the expert is not sure, I accept the solution proposed but would just like to know how to test the fan.
    Thanks

Hello there, it is possible that it's just a fan on the unit that has died, and if so it may be replaceable by yourself. However it does sound like the lamp has actually failed, and possibly the power supply along with it (or maybe the power supply failed causing the lamp to go). Either way it is most likely much more serious than just a bad fan.

I would have someone give you a free estimate / evaluation locally if possible.

Here are the parts for that TV if you wanted to get an idea of the cost per part:

That definitely sounds like a lamp, but like I said (and you mention here in a moment) it could also be the power supply.

    2. Would there be a causal reason that the fan and the light failed simultaneously? Seems unlikely.

The fan could fail and the lamp could overheat thus causing it to short out / fail. It can happen.

    3. The idea that the deep rasping sound is the power supply intrigues
me since the connection seems causal -could a power supply "failure" or
outage cause the lamp failure? In which case the lamp may still be ok?

It could, chances are that it won't damage the lamp right away, if you plug in the new lamp, fire up it, and the lamp works but that pulsing sound is still there shut it down and inspect further, see question 6 here in a moment...

    4. Would a failed power supply make the continued sound of vibrations any time I turn the set on?

    Yes definitely

    5. Can we some way quickly test whether the power supply is failed or failing?

Unfortunately not really, the way I test it when repairing is to just replace the part and see if the issue clears up...

    6. I would like to know with certainty if the noise is coming from the fan or the power supply

The best way to check this would be to unplug the fan (it should have a power connector of it's own) and fire up the unit. If it still pulses then you know it wasn't the fan, if it goes away then it was...

    Thanks

HL-P5063W Constant buzzing when on or off

The clue is you hear it with the set off, most likely a transformer or coil in the standby power supply, not unheard of (no pun) for this type of part to actually vibrate hard enough to make a unpleasant sound that can be heard.

Troubleshooting consists of finding (listening) the culprit and either replacing the part or in many cases Hot glue applied (some if a small coil or transformer will use super glue on the copper coils) to the exposed wires on the part.

Hi,Yes your problem sounds like the DMD board. This is how it works: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/dlp1.htm Basically the light of the lamp goes through a tunnel that carries a color wheel(rotating disc with a gamma of colors that creates the colors on your tv)then the light of the lamp goes through the DMD board which is a chip composed of around 2 million pixels that creates the images and colors. When it starts to fail it will create black bars, pixelation, color distortion or white dots on screens. Here's a video that will help you find where the DMd chip is located : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jr_9A5Xd2Q Have a blessed one!
