This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. This will get worse with time, and the pictures may be jumbled next. Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. Believe that you accidentally pressed the DISP button on the bottom back row of your camera. This manually turns the display on and off as desired to save batteries. Press the button once more to turn it back on.

the image is all white or has lines through it.Definitely sounds like a repair issue, and has been a previous problem with the camera in the past. There is a defect in the sensor of the camera, and happens quite frequently in this model. I would try and contact Canon about it, and see if they'll repair it for free. If not, its probably going to cost more than the camera is worth to repair it.

Sounds like you accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the screen on or off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder, just like you've been doing. To turn the screen back on, press the button once more.
